A month or so ago, I installed a Pac Brake on my 2001 with the 6-spd and HO engine. When I learned of the 3-second delay when wiring through the ECM, I opted for the throttle switch instead for instant response. Turns out, on the later models the throttle pedal returns to rest when the electronic cruise control is engaged, allowing the Pac Brake to activate in cruise mode; not a good thing.

I contacted Pac Brake; they were aware of the problem and were working on a fix but their suggestion would be to convert to the ECM controlled wiring (with delay) to prevent the Pac Brake from activating when in cruise. Another idea was to use a relay to activate the Pac Brake when applying the foot brake in addition to the ECM control. Pac Brake supplied the harness and relays and I wired mine up that way; ECM controlled with foot brake override and it works great. When in cruise if you tap the brake to disengage the cruise control, you get instant response and when you remove brake pressure, the delay period has elapsed and the Pac Brake stays on. It’s much easier to shift (you don’t have to ‘play’ the throttle to keep the brake from engaging between shifts) and the 3-second delay turns out to be only about 1 ½ to 2 seconds anyway.

This is the second Pac Brake I’ve used on different trucks and I’ve always found their product to be first class with outstanding customer support. They’re always open to suggestions, one of which is to use a three-position switch: Off, Armed (ECM and foot brake activated) and Brake (Foot brake activated only-great for around town). If you would like more information or wiring diagram, call Pac Brake and ask for Bill Lang: 1-800-663-0096.

By the way, for the best price and good service when purchasing a Pac Brake, call Ed Purcell at Truck Parts East: 1-800-828-5438.
