Yep, BD make a 4" remote mount brake. They offer 2 versions 1 is vacuum & the other is air operated.

Don't worry about the cost. With a load it don't matter. Stopping does. I use mine all the time, loaded or not. All brakes work from the higher the rpm the better the brakeing. I don't think you can beat the US Gear de-celerator. It has not let me down yet in 78,000 miles. It fit under the truck in front of the muffler and with a wastegate is really slick. Down a grade with a load it will slow the speed, not only maintain.
All are good and work but the Gear brake in a 96 3500 needed no spring change. It can be adjusted for any pressure, but 30 lbs is for mine.
Hope this helps some.

So which one is the better of the two remote mount BD's? (including price, effectiveness, ease of installation, longevity, etc. ) Also anyone have a price on these babies?

Don't get me wrong here, I would love the BD, but its out of my price range. Unless somebody sends me a great price (through Email of course) Like I said, I am looking at the PAC and Jacobs which are around the low $600. 00 mark.

I had the U. S. Gear brake on my last truck and had nothing but problems. Might be because I had Camping World install it. I had to replace the control module three time of which I had to pay for two of them. They are pricey little things. The last problem I had was on a downgrade East of Laughlin, NV when I kicked the brake in it blew everything off including the muffler. Had to fight with Camping World for a year trying to get re-iombursed for the $500. 00 it cost to get everything put back together. Had to settle for $300. 00. My brake on my present truck is the BD. I looked at both the Pac Brake and BD and I was impressed with the quality of the BD construction and went with them. So far so good.

I have a PacBrake. The cylinder DOES NOT have a spring return. It is vac. both ways. After a couple of years mine also stuck closed, had to go under hood and give it a bump. Pac gave me a new cyl. under warranty. #ad
A year later the cyl. went bad again, this time it will not close. Contacted Pac. they said. only 6 month warranty on repacement parts, they would give me a new cyl. at dealer cost, $100 with the shipping. #ad
I purchased the new cyl. but next time I will purchase a BD brake. You are correct PacBrakes cost less. #ad

Can I get a BD butterfly and cylinder assembly without all the other parts that come in the kit?

Paul you are correct when you stated that the Pacbrake is vacuum actuated in both positions (on and off). My apologies here folks on this #ad
I don't know what I was thinking when I replied to the question. As I remember correctly before I installed my Pacbrake I could move the rod in either direction by hand.

OK it sounds like the BD is better than the Pac. I know the BD has more retarding HP than the Cummins/Jacobs, but how does the rest of the features compare. I had pretty much decided to go with the Cummins/Jacobs on "name reputation", "approved" and price. Am I going to have problems like with the Pac? Is the Cummins/Jacobs vacuum both directions or does it have a spring return like the BD? I am sure the BD is worth the money, but the Cummins/Jacobs is several hundred dollars less. I rarely tow (don't own a trailer and one is not in the plans), so the retarding HP is not as critical to me. I just like the benefit of longer service brake life and the warm up abilities in the winter.

Any words of wisdom?

One other figure to throw into the equation. I believe PacBrake advertised the highest exhaust flow when open. That is one thing that sold it to me.

No, that's not true. BD has the highest flow when in the open position, followed by Pac. Jacobs is the most restrictive. I have never flowed a US Gear brake, so I can't comment on that one.

I have BD exhaust brake as well and have been very happy with it exspecially this past fall when I towed my trailer over the Rockies outside of Denver, CO and I never once had to touch the service brake and if anything I had to turn the BD off as it was slowing the truck down too much. And it also works great for warming up the truck in the morning as well. But I am sure any of the brakes are good.

The muffler blew because the wastegate was set to high. The same thing happened to me when we were setting it up. It is to be set at 30 lbs.

wiz1,

Check out the links for exhaust. BD-Power is in there for the info. Order directly from BD or from several other vendors.

With the HX40, you need the 4" inline version. I have the regular elbow style BD. I consider my BD the best aftermarket acc that I have installed.

I have the second BD brake on my truck because of adding the HX40. I had to move the brake downstream. I've installed and tested all of them over the past couple of years and the BD by far outperforms them all and poses the least threat on hindrance of power. I race my truck and it has the BD and well over 500hp. Enough said.

Had a US Gear unit on my old 95, and was installed at Camping World. It performed flawlessly for me, and the present owner reports that the truck shows well over 200k miles and NO PROBLEMS!! He uses it every day, loaded and unloaded.
