Has anybody out there installed a Pac Brake, and changed their own valve springs on a '92 Dodge Cummins. I'm thinking of doing all the work myself. Buying Pac Brake kit from Thoroughbreddiesel.com. Can the springs be changed without removing the head? is a valve compressor the only special tool that is necessary. Any advice would be appreciated. I'm a newbie here and hope this works. Learning a lot reading what you guys have to say. Just changed the throughout bearing and pilot bearing at 180,000 miles, clutch disc, and everything else was fine.

Yes the springs can be changed without removing the head. Simple hand-tools are all that is needed as well as the spring compressor.

PS welcome to the forum!

Yes, not hard at all, Napa has one that works well. Make sure the piston is up on each spring change so you don't loose the valve.

Yup. Took a few hours the first time. Very easy. Get the Listle valve spring compressor for head on vehicle applications. I will also look for the link to the how to article. I found it very useful when I did mine.

Congrats on your first post too! Nice to have you here!

I installed the 60# valve springs, and adjusted the valves today. In about one week I will install the Pac Brake. The only trouble I had was trying to go with the Lisle spring compressor. Had so much trouble right from the gitgo that I drove the 15 miles to Napa Auto and bought the KD 2078. After I got the hang of it on #1cylinder the rest went much easier. Enjoyed the job and saved $270. 00 in labor, plus $90. 00 on the valve adjust. $26. 00 for the Lisle at Geno's, and $36. 00 for the K. D at Napa. Used all the instructions from this forum. Tell me T. D. R. isn't worth the bucks.

I have one of the Lisle compressors and it didn't work well. I modified it quite a bit and now it works slick. The only problem I have had is the fact I have to lay across the top of the radiator. I gained some pounds (55) and that didn't help. So I now use two seat backs from a school bus (one atop the other) and it is very comfy, so much so, in fact, that I have been found to nap right on the spot.

Where did I score the two school bus seat backs?????????? I ain't sayn'

G-leaf - There is alot of things we wont ask you as we know you aint sayin! :D

Maggies - Glad to hear it worked out! Isnt the TDR great? :)
