Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Paid off Truck/ Tranmission Shop Declares transmission Terminal...

I took my '95 in to have the transmission serviced in preparation for a drive to California next week. While I was waiting for them to call, I got an email from the person I was buying the truck from letting me know that I had paid it off.

Two hours later, the transmission guy calls and tells me that my transmission is on it's last legs. They found metal in the pan and the fluid was pretty foamy. I had joked with the previous owner that their last check was going to be a dollar short to prevent this from happening.



ACK! What Are my options for a transmission and torque converter? I've ordered the book from atsg. biz that covers the transmission. Do any of the big guys sell a kit to rebuild/beef up the 47rh? I've always wanted to dig into an auto transmission.

If you are going to use it as a heavy duty tower or race truck you will need to get a replacement from one of the major after market transmission shops.



If you are going to use it as a daily driver with occasional towing and you have the necessary tools you can buy a heavy duty overhaul kit to do the job yourself. You will need the Dodge service manual to do that, not some after market cheapie. Even if you overhaul it yourself you will need to replace the valve body and torque convertor with good ones. The stock VB and TC are poor jokes. You will need access to a shop press to overhaul the OD unit.

You will need a CLEAN work area, a good bench to catch fluid (I use a cadaver table).



The service manual is invaluable, the ATSG is good for reference for a mechanic - but typically doesn't give all the details.



If you never did a trans before - you will have a significant investment in tools - sometimes you can find the basic ones for a good value on e-bay.

I'm running a number 10 plate. I'd eventually like to bump that forward and add a GSK and 215 injectors. I rarely tow. How much do they usually run for parts to rebuild/beef up?



Where is the best place to go for parts?

I bought a heavy duty overhaul kit from TST some years ago. I don't know if they have it anymore. I think I paid something like $250 for it, but since I have a bad case of CRS don't count on it.

Dave Goerend help me rebuild my 47RH. He sent me the ATSG manual, walked me through the tear down, sent me the parts I needed (VB, OD, TC, and some planetaries), and walked me through the assembly.



I spent a fraction of the cost of a full rebuild and couldn't be happier with the transmission. I can romp on it pretty hard (with 370s, 191s, 0 plate, turbo, etc) and haven't had a single worry.



Give him a call, I can promise you'll learn something at the very least.
