2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Anybody wanna Swap 4:10's for 3:54's??

Hey guys, going to install the painless wiring fuse block. Where is the best location to slice the pink wire to? I have the waterproof unit and have not decided if it is going inside the truck or in the engine compartment. Trying to figure out wiring.

I too had an interesting time finding a suitable spot to mount mine. Don't know what intake (if any) system you're running, but I mounted mine to the engine side of my AFEII and it worked fine. We'll not discuss mounting the two circuit breakers ( ). It worked good and it out in the open for easy access. IIRC, 2nd gens have a little more free firewall / inner fender areas than the 3rd gen's do. But mine's in there and it's functional.

I mounted my fuse block on the drivers side near the top of the firewall with the ShortStop mounted on the fender wall. I ran power directly from the battery. The waterproof cover is starting to get some cracks in it but stays put for now. I'm not sure if they sell a replacement cover but I will need to figure something out soon.

I put mine where stated above, on the firewall behind the resivoir for the clutch fluid. I mounted the circuit breakers on top of the fuse cover by the battery. The pink wire should be tapped off the ignition inside the cab. Remove the bottom cover under the wheel. There's a large gauge wire that's dark blue, get a tester and test this first, but that what I used for my ignition hot wire to trigger the relay. Just get a 12v light, pierce the wire and turn on the key, your light should illuminate. If so you're set.

I just mounted my buddies under his steering collumn. I screwed it at a funny angle and managed to get 2 screws to secure it. Good luck.

fuse block

interested to know what kind of applications you use with a new fuse block? Do you just get a fuse block from auto parts store and mount and take off with wiring projects from there? baron

Anything that is not stock on my truck (or to be added) is (or will be) wired to my painless fuse block.

As of now

Powered gauges

Both fuel pumps of a 2 pump system

Auxiliary lighting

Edge Comp box power

I took a short piece of flatstock aluminum - about 1/2" wide by 1/8" thick by 3" long - and drilled two holes, one oblong, to mount to the hose clamps on the air intake from the turbo (the two hose clamps hold the rubber between the air horn on the drivers side). Add two nylock nuts to the hose clamp bolts to hold the alumium flatstock. Don't tighten the nut fully on the oblong hole. This allows any flexing between the hose clamps to occur. Then drilled two holes in the aluminum to mount the painless to. Works great, and is right next to the drivers side battery. The wires to the circuit breakers and wires going to the cab are easily routed from this location and there is lots of brake piping and factory wiring harnesses to attach the painless wires to.

I put the circuit breakers under the driver's side battery. There are a number of pre-drilled holes in the sheet metal, and with a little work you can line up the holes on the circuit breakers and attach with some small fasteners.

Routed the pink wire through the main rubber boot to the cab, and then over to the fuseblock by the driver's side door. Bought a fuse tap at NAPA and connected it to the auxilary fuse location. Works great. The only problem was that the NAPA tap didn't have recesses cut into the connection, so I had to use a dremel tool and do a little grinding. Nice thing about connecting to the auxillary fuse is that there is only power when the key is on. I did not want a hot tap directly to the battery for fear of drawing the battery down if there was a current draw from any accessories I connect to the painless.

Jellermeyer,

Here's what is attached to mine:

  • Control power for US Gear overdrive
  • Auxiliary fuel pump (pusher pump)
  • TruSpeed speedometer correction computer
  • US Gear exhaust brake control (not power to the brake itself)
  • Edge Comp box
  • Fuel pressure gauge
  • Air horn compressor

The speedometer correction computer, exhaust brake control, and Edge Comp box are all on the same circuit. This leaves two free circuits for future use. I have changed some of the fuses for others with an amperage rating closer to the powered equipment.

The Painless Wiring kit was one of the very first accessories I installed on my truck.

I just learned about the Painless Wiring kit. I see it comes in a few flavors, plain or Weatherproof with either 7 circuits 4 ignition Hot and 3 always hot,

or 7 circuits all ignition Hot

Looks like most are mounted under hood

I imagine I should get the weatherproof with 7 circuits 4 ignition Hot and 3 always hot.

I am planning to attach my transferflow tank to the Ignition hot side and my camper lights (inside shell and exterior rear loading lights) to the always hot side.

In the future I am going to install some gauges and more than likely I will end up adding another thing or two.

Or should I just attach the transferflow wire to the cigar liter

I am checking with you pro's on which I should get

Thanks, Bill

I guess no one wanted to make any suggestions :(

Abdiver I mounted mine of the firewall as per the illusstration, fits well great product! I have other painless products, one had a problem, quick call to painess and they replaced the problem part, after two years of use, quickly at no charge!

Mine on the firewall engine side by the master cylinder. There is a great tap for fuses that you pull the fuse (mini size or regular spade size) and put the tap in place of the fuse. The tap has a place for 2 fuses. 1 for the orgional circuit, 1 for the tap circuit. I taped in the fuse box by the drivers door.

I got the 7 weather proof all ignition on. I mounted the CB's over by the PDC.

I run:

fan for transmission cooler

fan for fuel cooler

gauges

BrakeSmart controller

USG Exhaust brake controller

Could anyone send me a copy of the wiring instructions? I've misplaced mine and haven't installed the kit.

Thanks,

Casey

I didn't know Painless made other products

Thanks

Bob, Thanks for the reply Would you suggest I go as you did with a painless that is all Ignition on vs some that are always power on and the rest ignition on?

Please anyone I would like your pro's and cons on this question

Thank you, Bill

I have mine located under the drivers side knee bolster on the inside. Drilled and tapped two holes in metal horizontal bar for mounting. I bought the 4-switched and three hot model. I have not used any of the full time hots as of yet, I am sure sometime down the road I will find something I will want on all the time. :-laf I have all my gages into one of the four, comp in to another, and trailer brakes one the other, one still spare. Tied the ignition circuit in to the fuse box by the drivers door, mounted CB or fuse under hood by clutch res.

Casey if you don't get a copy when I get my painless I can make a copy and send it to you. I will be ordering it at end of week or sooner it al depends on how long it takes me to figure out which one I should get
