Sorry its so long!

I have paint bubbling on the rear passenger side about 12" before the tail light all the way back to the light and around the bottom of the light in the red. Also behind the mud flap in the silver area the clear coat has shattered in large areas and started to peal in other areas. I only see this happening in the rear passenger side quarter panel. The rest of the truck appears to be ok with the accept ion of some junk in the paint in other areas. My truck has an 01/03 build date. I have tried to get the dealer to fix the area. I've taken it to them back in april and july when it wasn't so bad and they keep telling me that they cannot do anything with paint until DC rep looks at it, that they will schedule a meeting and let me know when he will be there. My concern is no one ever gets back to me. I have called DC two days in a row now and they tell me the dealer should contact me within 24 hrs, day three still haven't heard from anyone. At first the bad area just looked like a little dirt in the paint as time went on I have hundreds of bubbles in that area. I'm worried that if it is happening in that are what to stop it from starting in another area of the truck.

Well tonight I pulled the rear taillight and you can tell from looking at the inside that the lower area under the taillight was dented and bodywork was done and that area was repainted. So I was ****** and called the dealer the only one I could speak with was the sale manager. He informed me that the repair could have been done at the factory and the dealer would have no way of knowing. Has anyone ever herd of the manufacturer doing bodywork repairs before the vehicle is shipped to the dealer? Or is the dealer lying to me?? I asked the dealer before I purchased if there were any invoices for repair done to this vehicle becuase I had bad past experiences and they told me no. What do you think?

Burlington City Dodge New Jersey If anyone is Q

I saw the same thing on a brand new 1997 dodge caravan. Our unit received it new from the GSA garage with the only mileage being from the garage to us. We noticed bondo and a real crappy paint/repair job on the left rear quarter by the tail light. The driver who delivered it had to defend himself that he did not damage and have the vehicle repaired. The vehicle was sent to a body shop and the dent was repaired properly but I always wondered who did it.

Damaged Vehicles

I had a 95 Chevy 4x4 Z71 I bought new. Not long after the warranty expired I noticed the clear coat peeling on the hood, an one small place on the roof top. I took it to a guy I know that has a body shop to get a estimate. He ask me how long had it been since the hood had been re-painted. I told him never, I bought this truck new, he said well this hood has been re-painted for sure, he said that a dealer does not have to tell a potenial customer of any damage the vehicle received while in transit or received while on his lot if the damage does not total $1500. 00. Just going by what he told me.

My 1992 Chev had a spot on top of the truck that was touched up. Dealer stated that bodt sealant[caulking style stuff they put in the seams] was painted over at the factory. Also some spot welds on the rocker panels would cut my hand when I washed the truck. I :{ and :-{} and they took care of it. I'm pretty sure that the original touch up was done at the dealer ,but they never admitted to this.

They get fixed at the plant all the time. They are going to get dinged and dented as they go through the plant, and they fix them as part of the manufacturing process. I'm sure any major dent or scrape to a bolt on panel would be replaced, but a bed side would certainly be repaired. You can't really expect them to throw the truck away for minor damage. In fact, almost any new replacement body panel will require some spot putty or bondo to be sure the finish is perfect.

I believe no disclosure is necessary because it is all part of the manufacturing process, and is done before the truck leaves the plant. Chrysler got busted back in the 80's for driving vehicles home as "quality checks" and they damaged and repaired a few of them and didn't tell. It was a perk for the managers to drive a new car home. Well after they were severely fined, and paid a bunch of attorney fees, I'm sure they are very careful about damaged vehicles.

SAG2 is correct. Theres a special dept. at the factory to do metal and paint work on minor damage before loading and shipping. ALL manufactures do this. "Usually" its of HIGH quality and not noticable.

As many have suggested,

It is common for vehicles to have minor paint and body repair done before being sold "as new". I've seen several examples of this and I take a very close look at any new truck purchase to see if I can identify any repaired areas. The reason for my concern is: the factory paint process is entirely different than a repair and over time differences in appearance or failure of the repair are the rule rather than the exception. In your case, I would insist on a quality repaint of the affected area(s) at a minimum.

Same deal here on a 97 Dodge Ram 2500. Noticed the body work and repaint after about 6 months on the passenger side rear quater panel. Dealer said they had no knowledge but I am still skeptical as the truck had 42 miles on it when I picked it up and they tried to pass to me with the paper work showing 4 miles. Anyway I complained to Chrysler and the rep told me that sometimes damage occurs at the factory and they need to repair. Needless to say I wasn't happy but to be honest I still believe it was the dealer that did it because the repair was that crappy. I'll never buy another truck from them again.

Well threatened to call attorney, then dealer wanted to see truck again, by the time I got there they said they would have it repaired under warrantee. So aguess if it is fixed under warrantee it must of been damaged at the factory. Cannot beleive there isn't a law that they have to notify you of the repair even though it happened at the factory. It should be discounted or something!!!!
