anybody else had the paint coming off of the rear diff and the color looking like a little darker rust like gold. I pull 90 percent of the time and have amsoil 85 140 in it. I have 45k on the truck and am wondering if the diff has been hot and should i see the dealer about it. any comments greatly appreciated. . duck

sounds like it is getting a little warm, pull the cover and look for dark blue spots on the ring gear.

you can also run a diff temp gage.

i would go to an aftermarket cover something with larger capacity and add a few more quarts of diff oil, that will help on temps

dad did the same in his blue oval

he pulls 17,000 and it helped

The paint came off of mine in the first 10,000 miles. I was pulling some big loads. I figured it was either the added weight or just being new everything was really tight and needed time to seat.

I took a wire brush to it and got all of the flakes off, smoothed it up the best I could and put a better coat of paint on it. So far its holding up fine.

Yep, pretty normal if you tow with them a lot. All of my trucks end up like that pretty quickly. I also run Amsoils severe gear 85-140 in back just because of the amount of towing. My '99 Ford 7. 3 with the 11" Sterling rear end made it over 100k before I had the rear end rebuilt. This was preventative, no damage just 5 years of max loads and snow plowing. It has since gone another 150k and is working fine. There hasn't been paint on the cover since it was a month old :)

thanks for the replys folks..... i was afraid i was going to have to take it to the dealer and it would take them a month of messing around with it, meanwhile i was losing money because no truck to work with. . gp

That's why so many folks go with the Mag-Hytec brand. The MH Dana 80 holds about 8qts (a 3 qt increase), has cooling fins, comes with a threaded 1/8"NPT temp sender for adding a diff temp gauge, and looks very professional.
