Paint for equipment

I have finished my sickle bar mower res-to need to take it back apart and paint it have been looking for a good paint and people point me in this direction????The U. S. has decided that we need to be protected from ourselves so they require LOW VOC type paint to that I say B*** I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER. If this works ok but dont need to strip paint and get something else. Any ideas would be appreciated. Im not above going to Canada for good paint something that actually works would be nice.

You only have access to low VOC paint up there? Dang, thought is was only Ca.

Low VOC dosen't cover I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER. It even doesn't cover itself the next year. Ask me how I know.

Hey BIG, check out www.protective.sherwinwilliams.com. You will find a primer under the epoxy section called Macropoxy 646 and then if you click onto the polyurethane section you will find a top coat called Corothane 1 HS. This is not a one coat wonder, you will have to purchase the two components seperately (epoxy primer and polyurethane top coat) This stuff is the real deal. Commonly used in highly corrosive environments like ship yards, off shore drilling rigs, chemical plants,etc. It is pricey and may be more than your looking for, but if your looking for a paint system that will last a lifetime, this is the stuff your looking for. It can be rolled or brushed on, and recomended spraying method is with an airless sprayer but I have thinned it down enough to spray with an hvlp cup gun. Oh yeah, one more thing. I HIGHLY recomend you finding a respirator or at least painting in a WELL VENTILATED area, or be prepared for one hell of a ride :-laf Been there done that!

Here ya go, BIG. Type in the search words like I mentioned earlier (you will have to do 2 seperate searches). I would have to imagine you could order this stuff online. We actually have these products in our local store because there is alot of industry along lake erie and it is a very popular coatings system with the chem plants, coal docks, power plants, etc. You would be hard pressed to find a better system, honestly. I know people tend to think "house paints" when they think sherwin williams, but this stuff is worlds apart. Like I said though, it is pricey.

One more thing to mention, the macropoxy is a 2 part system. (one to one mixture) I dont see where it really specifies that on the web page but you will need part "A" and part "B". Corothane 1 used to be a 2 part system as well ( 4 to 1 mixture) but they recently went to a single part paint. If youve got any questions, hit me up.

Thanks for the heads up on the paint (if you can call it paint!) DuPont has about the same thing didn't see any other colors other than black,white,gray and some limited tint choices. Have to look into them to find out. Sherwin Williams store in town has always said he can get anything Sherwin Williams. The color is of concern need to have it to finish rest-o up right. Not even sure if this would look right would like to find someplace that has used it and see for myself. Starts out like this and finish like this. Not the same machine but kind of gives you an idea of what im looking at.

Hey BIG, the macro (primer) can be tinted to many shades and could probably get very close to what your looking for. You would want a slight variance in color it makes it easier to see that you are getting a nice uniform coverage when applying your top coat. As far as the polyurethane, I know for sure they have a dtm paint and can match it to factory color specs ( john deere green, int red, cat yellow, etc) but I am not 100% sure if they can do that with that corothane. I have sprayed various pieces of equip over the years like pay loaders, hydro axes, cranes, and manlifts and we always used their dtm (direct to metal) paints, although we always added a primer for extra protection. Waste Management uses the dtm on all their dumpsters, every driver Ive ever seen tests em out everytime they dump em :-laf I will say their colors have always been spot on and are very durable. If applied properly, they have a nice flat gloss and hold up very well to the elements.

There is an auctioneer up the road a ways he is a collecter of obsolete farm equipment. Some of the stuff is like what is pictured above, but I think most attachments are designed to be hooked to a tractor. Its all real old stuff. Im not exaggerating when i say hes probable got a 3 - 4 acre field that is bulging at the seams with all this equipment. Im in awe everytime I drive by it. Next time I go that way Ill try to get a picture for ya, BIG. I think even you might be impressed

Are they for sale or just some put in his yard?On the way into Missoula there is a few old tractors that are just left in the field. That I would like to have and maybe someday restore. I have a few more implements that need my time but with a wife that has most of my time accounted for on most days, I dont think that will happen until she needs something done that involves the use of one or more of them.

I like working with the old equipment
1. its a workout

2. its fun

3. reminds me of how easy we have it today

4. Most of the stuff involves working with my mules

Yeah they pulled the seats, and have them in the saddle shop. I was wandering around looking for an elk and mostly I got pictures. This one was one of my favorites, and the ranchers. They don't seem the buckshot type though. They all have saddle guns.
