My friend has a '95 and the paint has just started to peel on the hood. I know that DC had only a 5 year warranty on the paint but come on... these jerks knew about this problem since the 1st gen trucks and didn't seem to fix it!! What are the leagal issues that any of you have tried? What worked and what didn't. Someone said to go the small claims route. I figured that a class action should have been filed by now.

Chris, small claims works, DC won't even fight it. If the class action route was attempted DC would fight it with all their mite, it would probably still be in court ten years from now.

. I have two friends that have this problem with their paint and I will forward it on. Even though it says that DC fixed the problem after '98, another friend of mine's '02 with a white paint job looks like it could easily have this problem in the future. I saw where he had a few road debris chips and the paint seemed to flake off!!

The peeling paint issue I'm dealing with starts out like a little pimple on the paint then the paint starts turning a lighter color expanding outward from the pimple. At this point a car wash, pressure washer or even compressed air takes off the paint in sheets. I've blasted off sheets that have remained intact over a foot square.
Illflem, that's exactly what happened to the top of the cab on my '95. A piece of paint about 12 by 18 inches sailed off at the car wash. Boy was I surprised! I had bought the truck used, and it had right about 98,000 miles on it. I had to have some bodywork done on the driver's door about 6 months later, and just paid the body shop $50 to paint and clearcoat the top. The bodyshop owner and I looked really carefully at the top, before repainting, and we couldn't see that any clearcoat at all had been applied there. The other parts of the truck all were clearcoated and have lasted fine.
After the paint delaminated, primered metal was what was left--a very clear case of paint failure, for the paint simply didn't adhere to the primer very well. It probably wasn't due to the clearcoat missing, it was probably due to EPA regulations making it harder and harder to produce good paints!
