I just picked up a tonneau cover for the 97, and it comes over the top of the bed rails and slightly down the side of the truck. Great for weather proofing, but I am concerned that the rubber weatherstrip will rub the paint. I've seen a lot of rigs that have had this problem (mine included) from the rubber seal on the rear window of shells.

Has anyone used the "3M SCOTCHCAL PAINT PROTECTIVE FILM BY LEADING EDGE - 2" BULK TAPE" from Genos as a buffer? It would keep the weatherstripping off the paint, but I don't know if it would be thick enough to not get rubbed through itself.

Any other solutions?

Thanks,

-Vic

I'm not sure if I understand correctly, but if I do, what about raising the top with a 1/4" spacer, if you don't need the great weather-proofing it might keep the side from rubbing. Then again, I might be out to lunch:rolleyes:

I used black duct tape on my black 99 Toyota prerunner's bed rail, to protect it from scratches from the camper shell.

Worked perfectly !

It may be more expense than you are looking for, but check with a automotive window tinter in your area. 3M makes a clear product that is used on the front edge of hoods to reduce rock chips. It comes in 6" (?) wide strips. I'm sure they can lay this down over bed rails as well.

Vic,

I've had the 3M Scotchcal on the top edge of my tailgate for 5+ years to protect it from the door seal on a topper shell. It has not rubbed through in this time, very durable stuff. I had also installed the pre-cut Invica shield Scotchcal in the front of the truck and have never had a rock penetrate it.

I put on plastic rail caps.

I do not recommend Wade brand. Very poor fit & finish details, but they do protect the paint.
