Paint Warranty???

The paint on my '05 looks TERRIBLE. It scratches and chips and peels so easy, it's sick. My '98 was WAY better than my new one. Does Dodge have some kind of warranty on the paint? It's an '05 with 35000 km on it, and was bought new is September. This has been mostly highway miles, with some gravel, but not much.

Its 3/36 but I bet a dealer would want his DSM to inspect and advise if D. C. will or would be involved in a repair.

I wonder if it's color related. Mine is silver and seems tough as nails. I've driven on a lot of dirt roads as well as a variety of highways and I don't have any chips at all. My previous Dodge was black and seemed to chip and scratch a lot easier.

I have the same problem on my 05 white dually... . I looked thru the warranty info and it seems that it has to "rust-thru" before they will warranty it. Love the truck, but the paint is definitely a bummer.



If anyone has had theirs repaired... . let us know. .

My '98 was horrible! It bubled, then started to flake off. My buddy now it, and much of the paint has come off the roof and hood. I was great about waxing it, but that didn't help. And keep in mind, it spent its whole life in Southern California, not even near the beach. So basically what I'm saying is that even the '98 paint was crap.

I am glad I am not the only one, mine is the bright pr4 red. My 05 1500 is silver and I don't have that problem with it. Maybe it has something to do with the colors being non metallic. That is one similarity. Just a guess.

I've heard dark colors chips easy compared to light colors. Supposedly dark colors are "large pigment" that chip easy. No idea if thats true or not. But my dark red and black chipped way easier then my white truck. /shrug

The 98 was a PRIMER problem used by a NUMBER of manufactures and Chrysler(as well as others) up to a certain time limint took care of repaints. I had my 93 flake and got a TOTAL repaint with new type paint and CLEARED for a $100 deductable when it was 7 years old. But the 98 issue is NOT comparing apples to apples. My 1998 1500 the paint looks NEW with only a COUPLE of rock chips and my 03 has even less chips and no issues with paint.

Well they did change the black paint in 06 to pearl coat, so perhaps they did that to either reduce costs (if they use it on cars) or to fix a problem

Not sure what they're doing now but Dodge used to cover paint under their "Brightwork" warranty, which was 1 year or 12k miles.

The 5 years I was at a D. C. dealer it was 3/36 same as basic truck.

Some people say Mexican trucks have better paint (it's probably oil based primer, not water based, like in the U. S. ). Where is yours built?

Paint info for Canadians

Not sure if the US has a similar book, but here in Canada we have this used car guide called the "Lemon-aid Car Guides". Here is a link to it http://www.lemonaidcars.com/background.htm . One of the interesting things this guy does in his books is he studies and presents automobile case law and hidden warranties. Our legal system here is based a lot on precedents. The trick here being you need to know what precedents have been set. One of them concerns the lifetime of paint on an automobile. It turns out that a number of years ago someone sued an auto manufacturer over a failed paint job on a 10 year old car and the judge not only found in her favour but, in his opinion, felt a paint job should last for something like 15 years, no kidding, and this stands as case law here in Canada. So regardless of what the new vehicle warranty says or limitations they attempt to place you could fight it, as apparently people in the know sometimes do, and be virtually assured you would win. Of course since I am not a lawyer please take this info for what it is worth, $CAN 0. 00.



I live on a gravel road and do lots of driving on gravel roads and, not unexpectedly, my white truck has severe chipping on the wheel well lip and rocker panels, though my 98 silver truck did not seem this bad.

Well, my 04 3500 is silver, I drove it home 200 miles from the dealership on I-10. When I got home I found chips in the paint already (7 or 8 of them!). I called the dealer and was told that it's all just road hazard!!!!! This on a brand new truck. I intend on getting the truck painted in the future.



I talked to a friend who owns a local auto body shop, his comment was that the big 3 manufacturers had all switched to a lead free base paint which isn't as flexible as the paints of old :{ . Whether there is any validity to this or not, I don't know, just passing on what I was told.

My bright red 06 is showing lots of paint chips. Less than 5000 miles. Mexico built. My 03 Ford F150 (also bright red) had essentially no chips in nearly 20,000 miles, driven in the same areas. I still like the Dodge much better, though, paint chips and all.
