I can see where the panic button on the keyless entry remote unit could have some practical value. In my case, however, I have never used it, but I have certainly set it off at some very awkward moments. Just recently it did not want to shut off as it should, and that is with me knowing how to run it.

I did a search, and found where one person said you can take the remote apart and insert a piece of paper in between the switch contacts. I am thinking I would rather disable it at the truck end.

Does anyone know a convenient way to disable this feature on the truck, by disconnecting a lead, for example? I am sure this feature is fused with other circuits, and therefore could not be disabled by removing a fuse.

thank you... .

Prying the remote open (same procedure you'd need to do to change batteries) and inserting a small piece of paper or tape, , takes abot 30 seconds start to finish, and is much easier to restore if you ever sell the truck.

You mean like when you're going to work at 5 am...

and sit down to tie your shoes with your keys in your pocket.

Maybe if I wore baggier pants?

I did open the remote and removed the circuit board, revealing the switch contacts, such as they are on such a fragile bit of flexible circuit film.

I can't say I am very comfortable putting anything in there, particularly since the contacts for the lock and unlock modes are quite nearby. If the paper drifted over for any reason, you would then be disabling the lock mode.

I think if it was an electromechanical device with round, metal switch contacts, then this idea would make sense, but to put paper in there, and also do anything at all to ensure that it stays in place, all seems too risky to me, given the price of one of these remotes.

Thank you for your reply, however.

In the meantime, does anyone have another idea regarding lead disconnection?

Thanks... .

I opened mine with a coin and put a piece of electrical tape on the panic contact over 2 years ago. NO problems.

I thought about tape, and certainly can see it would not shift, but I am afraid it would eliminate any possibility of enabling the system in the future, it you so desired, or sold the truck. The tape residue would not likely come off well enough to allow it to work again.

I may do that yet, however.

I also used a corner from a post-it note. Hasn't shifted in 18 months. Worst case, you keep one of the two keyfobs pristine -- or just buy another virginal keyfob when you sell the truck.

When truck was brand new... crawled under on my back to marvel at the "new" stuff... . keys in back pocket..... panic alarm went off with my head between the crossmember and the blacktop. Smack on crossmember... then on blacktop on recoil ... then back on crossmember. Multiple cycles and lumps. Wife laughed until she cried. Pried the key fob apart that night and installed scotch tape to prevent further embarassment. Still working 5 years later... . wife still watches oil changes in anticipation of entertainment.

I believe reading this thread yesterday jinxed me because I set mine off this morning at 4:00am leaving for work. I bet the neighbors loved me. :-laf :-{}

I pulled apart teh wife's remote for our Bonneville and removed the nub that pushes on the board that makes contact. I'm temped to do the same to the new truck's remote as I don't ever picture a moment I would hit the panic button. ( I'd f%#kin kill em first)

Simple Bomb to do... I just put in a piece of paper... I made it just big enough to wrap around the edges of the circuit board. Hate that stupid panic button going off when reaching for the keys.

My son, Anderson would get ahold of my keys EVERY nite and press the buttons, eventually setting off the Ram and the Durango.

My solution was to put the keys inside my cooler.

I have considered disabling the panic, but the wife may need it some day.

Embarassment

Good to know that I am not the only one doing this!

Went to have my valve stems changed out last Saturday and set it off when I got out of the truck... . Everyone watching me to see how long it will take me to shut the d*^M thing off! push the button. . nothin... push again... . nothin. . push push push... nothin:mad: Pop the hood and disconnect the wires to the horns. Very embarassing.

I reconnected the horns when I got home... don't know why, I use my Hadley when I want to blow the hornOo.

You think its bad with a regular horn, you should do it when your air horns are triggerd by your regular horn... :D

I have the same question though, how to disable it, actually I want to use the panic button trigger to do something else, like turn on my ESPAR heater. I looked at the wiring diagrams and all that, but I can't figure it out. . anyone ????

I used a low tech approach, just pry the little panic button out of the socket. Took me 2. 4 seconds!

What JR2 said.
