Parking Brake Adjustment

My parking is not holding as good as I need it to. I have looked in the service manual and have not found anything about adjusting as part of maintenance.

Should/Can I just adjust the wheel inside the drum like any other drum brakes? Or are the shoes in need of replacement? Seems like these should last forever since they are only used to park.

I would assume there is some adjustment possible at the brake mechanism. You might want to take it apart anyways, since there could be a problem if they're not holding tight.

Just guessing here , but I thought it was a self adjusting set-up that actuated when the brakes are cycled while moving in reverse. Mine have tightened up since I picked the truck up (new) and it has about 2000 miles on it now. I back down a slight grade of 25 yards every morning when I leave for work and do the same thing at work too ! (at least ten cycles a week)

I have 4 wheel disc's on my 2004. 5 Are you sure you have drum brakes in the rear? I would assume if they are disc's they are probably self adjusting, but the would probably like you to use the parking brake every time you park because it probably helps keep it in adjustment.

All the 3rd gen trucks do have 4-wheel disks, but the parking brakes in the rear are drums which are cast into the center of the disks.

Interesting... . I will have to check that out when I rotate the tires. I was thinking they were more along the lines of the old Caddy calipers that had the e-brake lever on the side of the caliper.

I adjusted my 98 at the linkage just under the rear of the cab drivers side, they hold a lot better.

Actually my 15000 mile service says to adjust the parking break

Adjust it where though - at the cable(if possible) or at the brake?

Im not sure as I didnt look at adjusting it yet because it still holds good, but definately not as good as when it was new, so I will have to look into it sooner or later.
