parking brake??

just stand on the brake and let the clutch out a little, to dig a little hole in the dirt. kinda hard to do on asphalt, but has been done before.

Since I have a 5 spd, I use mine sometimes... if I'm at home loading/unloading something that only takes a few minutes, I'll leave the truck running.

I also leave it running sometimes at the fuel pump... . one time this winter I forgot to set the brake and the truck rolled a couple of inches as I was washing the rear window of the cap... . oops...

I have an automatic but still use the brake all the time when parking on a grade to take pressure off the park lock otherwise it puts a bind on lever when pulling it out of park. Also i've been told the automatic doesn,t cool in park as the front pump only runs in gear or in neutral.

Seems like one of my brake cables is frozen with rust, but one must work since it holds the truck. Gotta pull the rear drums and replace those cables. @#$% road salt. I use mine at times since I have the 5 speed. Mostly use it when fueling up, instead of waiting to cool down and shutting it off.

The pump runs all the time. When the engine is running so is the pump. If you have a service manual. Look on page 21-122 it shows the oil flow path. The oil comes out of the pump and bottoms out against the main valve and the boost valve. When these circuits are at pressure the pump pressure controll valve dumps the extra oil to the pan.

I always use it but I don't trust it. I leave the manual trans in 1st gear when it's parked with the engine off and I have a wheel chock in the bed of the truck for when I need to leave it running, and if I'm putting the boat in at a ramp my wife is in the cab with her foot on the brake.

I did rear brakes last year and freed up one of the cables and took 'em off and lubed 'em so I could use it. My truck was periodically not shutting off, so it was handy when I had to get out and shut it off under the hood (5-speed. ) Now, it sticks if I use it so I don't. But I'll get some new cables since I have to redo the brakes anyway because the new axle seals went and soaked the new shoes with gear oil. Yep, gotta love these trucks... :p

I allways use it & my current service truck is an automatic T400h verry strong trans

the E brake is partly responsible for brake adjustment so if you arent using it y'all better adjust your rear brakes

the second is I just feel safer I work near my truck all the time & quite a bit on hills the redundant method of stoping the truck from killing me makes me feel safe

& on flat land just from habit

my 2 cents

My opinion is that if you have a manual transmission, you should have a working parking brake. Nice for when you want to leave it running without having it roll away. I put new cables in my 91 so I could use it. I have never used the parking brake with my automatic.
