I need those 2 wedges that go inside the factory coupler, should tighten things up. Does anyone have the Dodge # or know if they make them aftermarket? Thanks

Don't buy the just the shoes, buy everything! The box, 2 shoes, the spring, the seal and retainer. I didn't save the receipt, so I don't have the #'s, but it was around $30- 40 for all of it. My seal retainer comes off sometimes, I'm going to try a bicycle inner tube for a seal, from the shaft to the box with hose clamps.

I called the loal Dodge dealer and they actually knew what I was talking about. In fact, they had 2 sets of shoes/springs in, $10 a set. Does the box thing get worn out too? I was under the impression the shoes were the major wear item, I was going to try that first.

Yeah, the box wears too. Run your finger inside, you can feel the drop. Shoes only will help, but if you do all of it, it will last quite a while. And pack it with grease! If you do it all, block the shaft when you drive out the roll pin. I didn't, and my seal, (i changed at the same time) started leaking again 2 months later. I think I bunged up the bearing. I'll find out, I'm gonna pull it again soon. I've got 10 or 12 k since I changed the box, etc. Still good!:D

Thats exactly the reason I don't want to change the box too... Anyone who still runs the factory coupler should add packing it with grease to the maintenence schedule too, I took the one off my parts truck just to see how it went together and it was full of rust and dirt.

The funnest part is clamping the seal retainer thingy on there! #@$%! I ended up using channel locks, crimping both sides at once. That's why I'm going to try the inner tube idea. ;)

buy a borgeson couple kit.....

It's the only permanent fix, no more road wander, makes it steer like it should. Buy it direct or from a dealer, around $200. 00, but worth ever cent, 20 minute job, 45 if you aren't handy... ... you'll never regret it. I rebuilt the pot joint and it was no better, or only marginally. Not worth the aggravation.

just my 2 cents... .....

I have found that flipping the shoes inside the pot joint is good enough for my liking, if stuff isnt too worn out. It wont handle like the R&P steering on my g/f's Dakota, but it is a drastic improvement over when I got the truck. I'll put the $200 elsewhere. Maybe shoeing tools, or go-faster goodies.

I bought the rebuild kit which includes the shoes and spring and pins. It was $10 at the dealer. I'm doing it tomorrow, I'll see how it turns out. The only thing I don't like about the borgeson is the set screws.

I don't like the price! Like Daniel says, I can put the money to better use elsewhere. Besides, it's not like I drive it 40 or 50k a year.

If I had another 2wd truck, I'd rebuild the stocker and spend the cash somewhere else. But on a 4wd with larger tires like my crew and my Ramcharger, I consider it almost a necessity. Should have clarified that for ya Pete ;)

OK...

Changing the shoes was a waste of time, most of the wear was on the little coupler box itself. I'm going to get the whole kit, box and all. Any suggestions on how to get the rollpin out without trashing the bearings and seal in the steering box? I'm going to try and make some kind of mini press using my harmonic balancer puller, but I don't have very high hopes for it...

Put a block between the shaft and the frame. Or make a plate of some kind with a hole in it for the puller to grab on to. Good luck!

My latest W350 came from Minn. with innertube wrapped on steer shaft to protect joint you are discussing. Problem is it collected salt an shaft is 1/2 rusted away ! Will a gasser 4x4 shaft be the same ? 2x4 is too short.

Also found fresh ps fluid on spring, are hoses same as gasser ? thanks Bill
