Steve,

For what it's worth, I bought a used VE pump from this guy. The low bid was $150 and I waited until the end. No one else bid, so I got it for that price. It arrived very quickly and safely packaged. It looked like it had almost no wear on it. I took it to the Bosch repair shop nearby and had it flow tested. That was an extra $100. So my thinking was, I have an almost new pump for $250.

In the back of my mind I kept hearing, "if something sounds too good to be true..... " But I asked Greenleaf if he'd swap it out for me. He agreed, so I took a trip to his house soon after. He was a little suspicious, and asked me if I new that there had been a large pump recall on some of the early trucks. I said no, but for this price, what the heck. He also told me that by the configuration of the pump, he could tell it was from an earlier model.

The swap went smoothly enough and we test drove it about 50 miles or so. It was all back roads and we put it through the full range with no problem. I went home via West Virginia and had about 500 miles on it when I got home. I put another couple of hundred on it after that. Then the next morning.....

I was on my way to take the wife for a doctors appt. Going uphill it was all normal. Then at the top, the rpms didn't go down. I pulled up on the pedal in case the cable was sticking, and it was normal. My rpms were about 1400. After mashing the pedal a couple of times, it came back down. I went down the the dumpster boxes near the main road and looked to see if the linkage was messed up. No problem.

After leaving Scott's place, I had brought the fuel screw out almost a full turn. So I didn't think this was a problem. We went on to the appt and I had the same thing happen a couple of more times. After the 4th time, I couldn't get the idle down with the pedal trick. I got out and backed off the fuel screw just in case that was it. Even with that, I only got it down to about 1200 before I didn't have any power.

Took her home and shut down. Scott suggested a couple of things over the phone, but I suspected something internal had messed up. Long story short, we're putting my old pump back on and Scott will perform an autopsy on the other one.

Now the EBay seller offered no guarantees of any kind, and I don't have any problem with the service or the deal I got with him. He trades a lot of pumps and I'm sure that most of them are ok. But when something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. However, if I could have had an almost new pump for $250... ...
