Okay guys im a newbie, well at least to the 12 Valve section, after 7. 5yrs of searching i found her saturday and brought her home today, will put in the details later, right now i need to know if anyone can tell me the part or gear in the rear end that operates the speedometer guage and makes the mileage numbers roll, thats the only thing wrong with it, its a 1992 W250, 5speed LWB... if anyone can help now that would be great that way i can call around still tonight and try to track down a part if possible.

Thanks and i will be posting pics and info later, i been up since 1pm yesterday and well im wired about the truck, she runs great, nothing but harmonious humming... .

The sensor on the rear axle is for antilock brake control. Most of use make sure it doesn't work properly. The control box is behind the glove box. It is a stand alone system.

The VSS (vehicle speed sensor) is located on the drivers side of the transfer case at the point where the rear drive shaft comes out. It could be a 2 wire or a 3 wire sensor. The adapter box is a known source of problems. Unscrew the adapter from the transfer case. Then unscrew the VSS from the adapter. Turn the adapter drive tang by hand and see if the VSS side drive turns. Then hold a little pressure on the VSS side and see if you can hold it from turning. The plastic gears have been known to strip in this adapter box. If you can't hold it. Then the adapter is good most likely.

If that adapter box checks good. Then I would check the wiring headed up the side of the transmission. I had mine rub threw a couple of years ago. Dodge didn't secure the wiring very good eather. So secure it so it doesn't flap in the wind like Dodge did it.

Post back on these items. If everything looks good. Then we can walk you threw testing the VSS. Let us know how many wires on your VSS.

Thanks for the reply Philip, right now its dark out and pouring the rain, wished i had access to a garage, I was hoping to get it inspected tomorrow since thats all i need to do in order to drive it... any chance you might have some pics or point me in that directions... sounds like coverall and up under the truck tonight rain or no rain... and this things pulls beautifully, has 96000 miles to the best of the knowlegde of the prior and second owner, more or less figuring miles driven... And she don't smoke a bit, pulled the mountain clean as a whistle. . can you tell im excited, hopefully the 24V won't get jealous and vice versa LOL... I will post back as soon as i know something...

Thanks again

Wyatt, if the speedometer is working and the mileage is not rolling it is not the sensor. It is the odometer in the speedometer. That is a common problem on the 1st Gen trucks. You can find them in salvage yards and sometimes on ebay. If you speedo and odom is not working it is more than likely the sensor or adapter. Could be the gear inside the transfer case but not as likely.

Well the speedometer and the mileage rolling isn't working along with the trip numbers either im guessing that also is controlled by that sensor VSS. . It was to late and got dark on me and raining cats and dogs here so i will have to check tomorrow on that, The truck is a NC truck and has a current inspection sticker, not sure how Va's is but if that part not working isn't a requirement for safety then i can get an inspection done tomorrow and work on that problem plus i have no emergency brake, that could be either not hooked up or could be a broken cable im not sure as of yet, I do know i am very happy and i made a wise buy today, the truck is solid just need to find the molding for the entire truck to put back on and then later have it repainted the blue, looks metallic blue im not sure, i did find the sticker from the glove box which has the color codes on it, so im good there. .

Thanks guys for your help on this, it took me 7 1/2 yrs to find the truck i initially started out hunting for and now i have it.

The truck runs very very strong and i even tried to get it to smoke coming up the mountain, couldn't get it to at all and the transmission feels very strong no sloppy or any noise whatsoever.

No smoke! Can't have that. Once you start bombing there will be no end. Pump tweaks, turbo housing change and bigger injectors will bring the truck to life. Mine has at least twice the power it had when I bought it and it runs sweet now. I get a little smoke on take off and a little when I shift but I can lay down a smoke screen at wide open throttle and low boost, but it runs like a bat out of ****when I get on it. You will get the bug soon too.

its possible that later on i might get the bug but i doubt it as the 24V has been with me 6yrs and no bombing as of yet, guess im a simple man not much on that stuff, but i know i have a puller in the drive now and that right there is all the excitement i need!!!

Its geared 3. 54 in the rear but sure feels like 4. 10's thats in my automatic, of course it could be the 3. 54's with the 5 speed make for a better gear ratio. Anyways im very happy with it to say the least... . I hope the rain lets up today so i can get underneath it and check that VSS out... . Will post and if the rain breaks i will have pictures to post.

Whooo... Hoooooo!!!

Another one has jumped the fence to the dark side Oo. Oo. Oo.

I'm excited and the truck isn't even mine!! LOL Oo.

A BIG WELCOME!! You are about to embark on a magnificent journey.

GL

I like the part where Philip says... . " most of us make sure that doesn't work. " :-laf

Thanks for the kind words of welcome there Greenleaf, now don't forget i also have the 2000 setting in the drive also, I know have 2 babies LOL... . But yes i have waited a long time for the chance at one of the 1st Gen. trucks and yesterday i made it a reality.

A few odds and ends to work on but nothing major at all. It has stopped raining for right now and i will try and take some pictures to post, and will take some pics of the inside, im trying to figure out what i need to replace to hold the power window and locks asseemblies in the doors, passenger side it hanging out from the door about 1/4 inch and drivers side has one corner about 1/16 out on one corner... .

Going now to take the VSS off and check it out... .

Okay, took the whole VSS assembly apart and out of the transfer case, i have a metal gear and it is spotless no rounding at all, cleaned everything up, the middle section turns and works freely, the top where the 2 pin connection plugs in it seemed a little gummed up, squirted a few drops of pb blaster in it and spun it for like 2 min. by hand... .

I called a friend whom his whole family including uncles has the 1st Gen. trucks, said his dads did the same thing and it was a cable(possibly the speedometer cable) he is calling his dad at work and is going to call me right back, so it could be this cable thats the problem.

Will post as soon as i find out something.

Wyatt, the 92 does not have a cable. It is an electronic speedometer. If the gear is good and the adapter is turning the sensor and the wiring is hooked up I would say it is a bad sensor or speedometer head. Maybe someone will jump in here who knows how to diagnose the sensor and head as I do not know how myself. Come on guys give him some help here.

Your truck does not have a speedo cable. The VSS replaced it.

PB Blaster is not a lube. Put some light oil in its place.

Scott you forgot the "properly". LOL

Okay now for an update, yep i found out, my friends dads truck is a 90 model, yep big difference, okay he had the same problem some time back, well he had bough the VSS sensor with the 2 wire connector... He put the new one he bought on my truck and bingo!!! mileage and speedometer needle working great, he said he thought after seeing mine that he had bought that part, he had just put it up in his building...

So he saved me alot of trouble and running for that part, plus this one is a mopar part and not *made in Taiwan* like the one Orielly's had.

The old part off mine was gummed up in the top part of that sensor, i used a few drops of PB blaster in hopes of breaking that mess loose, but it didn't work. Now the question i have is there a way to run the mileage up to where the mileage should be at, not exact miles but a ball park figure i have of 96,000 miles at present.

If someone can jump in on that question i would love to know if there is an answer.

And the part he has wasn't his problem it was something else, and now my cruise control works, now i have to figure out the power mirrors, either a fuse or switch possible, i am very happy, this truck was placed in ad as just ps, a/c, heat, said nothing about power anything so when getting down there i was like wait a minute this is not a standard truck. . Boy was i Oo. up and down inside... will post some pics tomorrow if i get the chance before work.
