Lift pump replacement?

Should I be worried?

I'm hoping to get this done before I go on vacation in April. What parts will I need (front crank seal, gaskets?, and are there any special tools required (puller for harmonic balancer, etc)?

I've searched a lot but most of the stuff I found was related to the 2nd Gen trucks.

I didn't use any special tools. Pulled the radiator, fan clutch is reverse thread. I used a chain wrench on pulley to hold it. You can try to break it loose before you take off the serp. belt, but mine was too tight. The balancer comes off no problem, just bolted on not pressed fit. Plastic sleeve comes with new front seal to get it on the crank. Might save the plastic when you are done so you can use it if you ever pull the front cover again. Wish I had (hint hint).

Hope I answered your questions,

Dave

While you've got the front case open don't forget to take care of the 5 10MM bolts holding the front case to the front of the engine. Four of them you can remove, clean, lok-tite and re-tighten them. The fifth is behind the PS Vacuum drive gear - you will have to bend a 10MM wrench at about a 45 degree angle, loosen, clean, lok-tite and re-tighten that one. If they come out they can easily do as much damage as the dowel pin.

Thanks for all the info. :) I had planned on doing the bolts at the same time, but now I guess I'll pick up a cheap 10mm wrench for modification. ;)

Dan;

Check The torque on those bolts, the 2nd Gen's are 18 ft lbs, not much, if you remove them and lock-Tite them. It is suggested to use some guide pins to align the cover. less battle to install, same size bolt, just longer, cut of the head and round it a little. some times the gasket can be reused, if removed carefully cleaned and resealed.

If you go to Dave Fritz's site [dodgeram.org. ] I think?- he has a description on both repairs.

just my penny's worth.

Marv.

Thanks, Marv. I have the FSM so I'll be sure to double check the torque specs before I tear into it. Good idea on the guide pins - I've used that method for lots of things and it saves a bunch of headaches. :) I'll probably get a new gasket regardless - I'd rather have all the parts on hand instead of having to run around in the middle of the project... and hope someone has it in stock.
