Biker - VS. - Squirrel - VS. - Cops

Howdy all, I just sent in my resume for a job in Pascagoula, MS. What are the benefits of living in MS vs. AL? How is the cost of living there? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, John

I spent almost 4 years in Biloxi, 20 miles away back in the '80s. I do not know how it is now, but I enjoyed it back then when I was young and single. Lots of good bars and things to do down on the coast, good 4 wheeling inland. Might not be as much fun for someone not in the military or single as alot of the people there are.

I lived in Long Beach in 80-81, graduated from High School there. I remember it being hot and humid but also remember having a great time. I'm married with a 6 yr old girl, people here are not very friendly, not unfriendly, but not friendly either. We've been here 18 months and have not made any "real" friends. My daughter is really struggling trying to find friends also. My wife and I both work full time, have to here just to pay the mortgage, plus I bought my new truck. If I am offered the job and take it, we figure we could live on just my salary down there. I'm just trying to figure out the cost differences between the states. I think both have state income tax (ca. does also), license fees, property tax, sales tax, fuel costs, plus anything else they can get you for. Thanks for the reply, keep them coming. John

Having lived here all my life I think you will like it. I worked on the road (traveling the entire US) for about 4 years and two things are for sure - people hear are (overall) friendlier than most places AND the cost of living is pretty darn cheap.

FWIW - the average price of a decent house in a nice neighborhood (2500 - 3000 sq ft) is about $130,000.

Good luck to you on your relocation...

Thanks for the replies. The link was pretty helpful. I'm not sure if Pascagoula is more like Hattesburg or Jackson though (those are the only two options). Like I said earlier, I haven't even been offered the job yet but it looks like if I am we'll be able to live on just my salary. Thanks again. John

I would opt for Hattiesburg or Pascagoula and stay away from Jackson..... Jackson has a lot of the "big" city problems and prices... . Hattiesburg is a great place I would say better than Pascagoula but Pascagoula is on the water. ;)

After reading your last post again -

"I'm not sure if Pascagoula is more like Hattesburg or Jackson though (those are the only two options). "

I now see you are referring the the survey link - Pascagoula is much more like Hattiesburg than Jackson. .

Thanks Steve. That is much better. It's a little out of date though, It's been awhile since a home in Temecula went for 212000. My equity has gone up almost 100k in the last year!! It's still not a positive thing, but it's looking better. John

When my sister moved from San Diego, her equity was so high, that Capital Gains would have eaten her lunch, except for the place she got on the eastern shore of Md, what a mansion!!!!!!!!!

I was worried about capital gains, but I found out there is a loophole. If you move for work, you don't have to pay it. I'm going to ask a tax person first to make sure though. John
