Passed by a Smoking Dodge

Ever wonder if Diesel at the pump isn't really Diesel?

old cummins power wagon

I was passed by a Second Generation Dodge Ram that was belching out a continuous, non-stop cloud of black smogg... ..... on a long DOWNHILL stretch of Interstate... . then up the following hill, then down the next... ... ... Per forum guidelines, I won't mention the time/location nor describe the truck. This could be a TDR member.

I would simply like to say, if your engine is smoking like a freight train while traveling down a long hill on the Interstate, you and your engine both have issues. Please remove the lazer cut DV's, install a fuel plate and reconnect the AFC.

A properly tuned engine, be it a 300 or 800 hp diesel, will not blow black smoke on a long downhill grade. Smoke is cool when you apply it on demand, or from a Super Stock pulling tractor. Little wonder 89% of the general populus sees diesel as trash.

Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus called. They want their clown car back.

BTW 10-15 mph over the posted speed limit is not cool either. I hope your P-Pump siezes a plunger 200 miles from home. :-laf

Actually, my old '95 with 370 injectors would smoke going down a long hill too. The exhaust temperature would get so cold with the engine at 2000rpm and no throttle the fuel wouldn't burn all the way. It wasn't black smoke but more of a white or grey cloud. I guess I could have shifted into neutral and stopped it but that wouldn't have been very safe...

I agree, Scott- smoke like that aint cool. We have a bad enough PR problem as it is (I seem to remember that around the campfire at SOP as well). I try to limit my smoking, but sometimes, i. e. cold engine with no KSB or hauling the mail up the on ramp to interstate, I cant help it.

I have nothing against 15mph over the speed limit, as long as traffic (or lack of it) allows, and I dont have a vibration from Hades. I've done it many times across KS and eastern CO.

I would think going downhill and not having your foot on the pedal would leave the exhaust clean, since (supposedly) no fuel is going into the cylinders (fuel is shut off because pedal is at idle but RPM is above idle). When I let off my '96's pedal EGTs drop to 140 after awhile and no hint of smoke, until I touch the pedal. Then it's a healthy puff of blue if the weather is chilly.

I suffer from SGS also. (Soot Guilt Syndrome) I always enjoy seeing a good puff or short contrail by others, But usually feel guilty about my own smoke. I get some from stop signs and lights if I use moderate throttle at low boost. I try to limit Black Death when ever in traffic.

It almost sounds like this fellow would have to TRY to get that effect. Poor form from the short sighted who wont care when the crackdown comes. They will just move on to some other "fad" to ruin for others.

I did have my plate full forward and AFC loosened quite a bit so I probably was a tad over-fueled at idle. Mine would also smoke if I was on a long off-road venture driving very slow. The people behind me were not happy...

I rode in Jeff's (thekidfan) 98 12v when I was in California, and it puts out a nice steady black haze pretty much at all times. I thought it was cool  he thinks it's annoying... his 1/4 panel thinks it's black :p

I had a plunger stick 12 hours from home with 11,000 trailer and I made it home no problem at all. I just had to hold it out of overdrive and rpms 2400-3000 to keep the engine from shaking real bad. Only diesel I have seen smoke going down hill was a 93 ford 7. 3 that had a injector problem and that smoke was white.

Oh my... . you guys are too much LOL

I can assume it's safe to say the fella that started this thread would not have liked following any of my last three trucks. black quarter panels are kinda like racing stripes for diesels.
