During the "snow storm of the century", my wife bumped the passenger door lock switch. I was able to get a piece of cardboard to lay on to retreive my backup key under the truck.

Drivers side won't lock the truck with the key on but the passenger's will. Is this normal?

Both of the door locks are switched hot all the time. They should work with or without the key in and either door should open the other.

I was trying to say that my wife locked my keys in the truck when she got out. I was already out of the truck. I can't do that from the drivers side. I have tried it again since then (with spare key in hand) to see if it was a fluke or what. I just want to know if this is normal?

I just tried it on my truck, the engine need not be running, just the keys in the ignition. Niether of my lock buttons work under these circumstances. That is all the input I have, sorry.

if you have a remote keyless entry and auto locks the drivers side door will not lock.
my wifes durango has the same locking system on it.
my truck does not have a remote locking so i can lock the doors with the engine running
i do have a spare key on me at all times.

Vince,

Yeah, that's what I have. Prone to locking myself out periodically, I always carry a spare key hidden under the truck. I thought that I might save someone some grief who was not aware of this possibility. There was 4" of slush on the ground so I really appreciated the piece of cardboard someone gave me.

Mine is the same. If key is in ign. you can't lock door with switch the first time you try but do it the second and it locks. Seems that you override it by trying twice.

Mine's a 98. 5 w/keyless entry and just the other night I had the engine running and was loading stuff from the driver's side and out of habit pushed the door lock button and closed the door. Needless to say, I locked my self out and my wife had to drive 25mi. to bail me out(don't have a sparekey)while the engine just sat there and idled.

arar,

Sorry you found out the hard way. That was why I posted this when it happened to me. I always have a spare key in one of those magnetic boxes under my vehicles.

Did a little experimenting with the power door locks/engine running combination. On my truck you can't lock the doors with the power lock switch with the engine running and the door open. However, for this feature to work the door must be open far enough for the door open switch to activate. Now I understand how I locked my keys in the truck.

When my 96 was new I was working in Long Beach Ca. The local AAA office cut me a spare key built into a plastic card with a metal spine that I keep in my wallet. It is about twice the thickness of a Credit Card. It's saved me many times. It was a free gratis service to AAA members.

Those doors should lock or unlock when the truck is running, when the truck is not running and from either door and with our without the keys in the ignition.

I always keep a spare in my wallet. I also keep a spare for the ignition, which is what i drive the truck with. I always keep my remote on my belt with the original key. This way i can idle my truck in winter and still lock my doors and turn on my alarm when i get out. I only idle with the jacobs on.
