Well I gave my truck a very through hand washing to today, and I think its official that my truck has faulty paint. I have notice about 4 spots on the tailgate that look as if the paint as just flaked off. I had noticed 2 spots aboout 5 months ago. It is not any bigger than a pencil lead, but it is noticeable to the primer. The truck has numerous rock chips, but those im not concerned about, because theere were from rocks, but it would be impossible for theses to be from rocks. I also noticed the paint has flaked around some of the edges of the tailgate were the steel was formed together. My truck is pretty much driven , as a car , and these spots are in places, that would not recieve contact during use. I have also noticed a similiar flake on the edge of one of the doors, and a small one on the hood. . I am thinking of approcahing the dealer, the truck is right at 1. 5 years old. Any advice on how to procede?

I had a 1996 2nd gen that the paint was soft and was peeling within weeks after delivery. It was very problematic around the headlights and the front door jambs. You could peel it with your fingernails. Yours sounds different than what I experienced. But this part of my experience should be helpful -- In my case I took it to the dealer. They immediately called the DC area manager (knowing they couldn't correct the situation) and the DC area manager offered me a total repaint. After much thought I declined b/c I didn't think the repaint would be as good as the original. It stopped peeling after time and I just forgot about it. Nowadays auto paints are way better so I think I would have it done. In your case I'd take it to the dealer. They probably will tell you it's not covered. I'd just jump to asking for the service manager and then if he won't help you, ask for the area rep. So far with my 2005 Patriot Blue I haven't seen any problems, knock on wood. Good luck!

My truck was held up for a about 4 weeks because of a possible paint problem. That was 03 though I would talk to the dealer about the problem. The dealer told me that the the darker the color the more likely the paint would chip and flake off. this was for the 03's so good luck.

For many years I've seen paint problems with blue paint on Chysler vehicles. Not all, but it is the only color that I've seen peel off. They had that problem for a long time.

my truck has a couple of chips and im not sure from what, also when it got hand dried at the car wash it scratched right down to the primer

Wow, you mean I have something else to look forward to? I've got scratches and chips down to the primer, but I haven't seen peeling/flaking... . yet.

Mine did the same thing!! Only it was the dealers porters that washed the truck. My NEW truck. They tried to make it right, even sent a portable detailing company to buff it out while I was at work. Better, but you can still see em.

I'm no paint expert ... yet. But it seams like a real smart move to put white primer under black basecoat. Custom pinstripes, I call em.

And here I thought I was special. :{ Join the club :{

After 4 1/2 months, my Patriot Blue QC dually (and that's a LOT of blue paint) is just fine. All the chips and scratches came from known incidents - and the truck has not been washed since March. Summer thunderstorms take care of the bathing needs :D

My 03 came with an extra warranty card saying that the due to the paint problems, Chrysler was extending the paint warranty on my truck. My patriot blue almost looks like it has been touched up and buffed out in spots - wonder if they had a problem and fixed it right at the factory? I'm only at 21k but have had no problems with flaking so far.

I do not have a Patriot Blue paint, I have Atlantic Blue, but I have had problems with flaking as well. I washed my truck and noticed that I had a spot on the front bumper about the size of a plum that had flaked off. I immediately took it in the get fixed and have not had a problem since.

I got a letter within 6 months of ownership from PPG that granted me a 10 year 100k mile warranty on my paint. There were problems with Patriot blue not adhering properly and flaking. Definetly take it to the dealer.

My 04 had a few THOUSAND chips in the first 500 miles. . Its the paint guys. D/C wouldnt do anything about it. i drove it for another 10 months and bought the 3500 Atlantic Blue. I love this color and not a chip or scratch in 13k miles! My opinion is that it is the paint, or in the case of my 04, lack of paint.

Mine has 42,000 miles and sits outside all day, every day. The only problems I have with the paint are on one of the reaer fenders when I was backing a large utility trailer blind into a nursery. Did I mention the fence posts they use to hold up the sprinklers?

Doh!

Anyway, my truck gets sandblasted every day in the spring and fall, I've hauled rock and other loose things in the bed (thank God for my Line-X), and it gets washed once a year whether it needs it or not.

This is actually my second blue Ram diesel. Both have held up fine.

Maybe I'm lucky?

Juan

Apparently some blue pigment chemicals react with the primer, so they are supposed to use some special primer for blue. If they don't, it will start to peel. Color coordinated primer would be very nice.
