I drove a 3rd gen 2500, red, 4X4, longbed, quadcab today (loaded with everything but leather, HO, 6 spd with 4. 10's) and was impressed.

I got to talking about ordering and asked what the "Deal" was when you ordered. My last truck I paid $250 over invoice when I ordered. These clowns outside of Charlotte told me I have to pay list price if I order or buy off the lot! Are they morons? So they will actually make more money off of me if I order a truck - since when I order they don't have to take possession (and thus finance it) nor do they have to market the truck.

Is this what others are seeing?

Allocation is also a factor. Dealers are only allowed to order what they have demonstrated they can sell. If they don't sell a lot of 2500/3500 Rams, then they won't be allowed to order that many either. A high-volume dealer that sells lots of Rams can afford to sll for less because they can order more to replenish.

Yup that's it $1. 00 over invoice. I never pay more than that and have walked out of dealerships because they wouldn't deal. Last truck was purchased here in Lake Havasu City, AZ for exactly that.

Don't give up and try at least 2, 3 or more dealerships and you will find one who is willing to make a no hassel sale. Remember; even if the dealership isn't a 5* dealer (they make more if they are) they still make 2. 5% on the deal and they don't have to do anything except order it, wash it and deliver it. Also, don't forget that 2. 5% of $30,000 is still $750. 00. AND make sure they know you know how much they are making on the deal. NEVER forget it's your $30. 000 dollars and without you they wouldn't be in business. If your local dealers can't operate on that margin for something that is already sold when they get it then go elsewhere. Also remember that for every month that a truck sits on a dealers lot he is making payments on that vehicle. The longer it sits there the harder they will try and get more for the truck and the more difficult it is for you to get a good deal.

If you are in a small town, not near several dealers, can't get a good deal ordering it then ALWAYS tell the dealer EXACTLY what you are looking for, have the money ready and ask them to call you when it arrives. They then know you are serious and ready to buy. You will get a good deal. NEVER be in love with a certain truck or dealership since you can always order specifically what you want. AND when you order a truck you get a really neat window sticker that states: "This vehicle was built especially for (your name)" which is pretty cool.

So to make a long story short; most of the dealers I know LOVE to order trucks which are already SOLD. They are no hassle easy money.

Scooby, I know how you feel. The dealers around in our area are tight. I bought my 2001 from Keffer ( across from the big gold building ). I had to dicker with them for a month, then I got a phone call one day and he said deal. I told him i would pay $1,000 over invoice. No dock fees. I paid $31,000 plus tax and tag. I ordered it and waited for it to get here. Like the other guys said hold out. If they wont do it, just be polite and say see ya, and tell them you will go elswhere, you might be supprised to what would happen.

Pricing seems to be all over the place. Friend of mine bought a new 2002 3500QC 4x4 CTD automatic not many extras, had trail tow but no camper special and it had 1500 miles on it, (dealer demo) It listed for $37,000 and he bought it for $27,000 WOW!! I found a 2002 3500RC 4x4 HO 6 speed SLT, camper, trailer tow, that I wanted it listed for $35,335. Best I could get them to was $28,615. I would of bought it for $26,000. 2 1/2 months later it is still sitting on the dealers lot. I think it is weird, the Regular cab I wanted is not in very high demand, you would think they would of wanted to deal more

I have been preaching and seems no one is listening. COURTESY DELIVERY!!! If your local dealer won't deal with you, choose one of the half dozen dealers that are TDR friendly and order the truck from them(where ever they are) and have them ship it to your local dealer on a "Courtesy Delivery". It is the ULTIMATE FROSTING! The courtesy delivery fee is generally around $200.

WE ARE THE TDR! WE ARE A FORCE TO BE DEALT WITH. We generally know more about the product than the dealer does. Let's get together!

If you do not know the dealers that are TDR friendly, we can provide a list. STOP jacking around with salesmen. START with the Fleet Manager first. If that does not work, go to the owner.

Yeah, except they misspelled my name. And they built it with the "G" option package instead of the "H" package I ordered.  So much for quality control..... ;)

Laughing Out Loud (LOL)

Hi Rusty:

It's not nice to laugh about someone's name but wouldn't you know it; after spending all that money they can't get the order right or even spell your name correctly. I believe it was Dale Cargenie (sp) who said the most important thing in life is a persons name. Lots of people mis-spell my last name but at least Dodge got it right for once :p

Barry I'm Listening

Barry:

I am sure missing something here. Is there someplace on the TDR that lists these TDR friendly dealers? I have been around for a while but there is so much information here it's hard to know where everything is.

Please enlighen us all

Thank you

Many of the TDR folks have used -- email address removed -- or 1 800 Bossier. They will drop ship or if it is a unit they have in stock, pick you up at the airport.

A new one is Bob Martin @ Mike Brown Dodge. He is the fleet mangler there and has just signed up with the TDR. He can be reached at 1 800 657 8720 or -- email address removed --

Tell them who you are and that I said Hi!

Both of these dealers will be involved with the LSTDR in some way. I like spending my $ with kinfolk.

Thank You Barry

Thank you for the information Barry:

Now all we need to do is get all the dealers in one location on the TDR. Maybe a new section called "TDR Dodge Fleet Dealers". As far as I know we really don't have anyplace for dealers to communicate with the TDR members. Maybe they don't want to?

What do you think; shall we ask our TDR guru Steve?

Hey how about this - buy your truck through a TDR Dodge Fleet Dealer and get a 1 year free membership to the TDR; Yea Baby :p

I went to one of the dealers here in Utah, (Hinkley Dodge) and looked at a fully equipped, and I mean FULLY EQUIPPED 3/4 ton Quad-Cab Laramie. It had leather and every conceivable option. Retail price was $41,455. 00. I could have bought it for $37,800. 00, that's $3655. 00 off! What do you think? Is this a great buy or what?

Was it a 02 or 03 model year? If 02, personnally I feel you could do better, the 1st thing that comes to mind is financing, they had better be ready to hand over a sweet interest rate (like less than 3% on 02 model years.

If 02 model attack the fact that it is outdated, not of the common rail, etc, blah, blah, blah. Ask him how much it will be 6 months from now?

If you have already done too much dreaming(love the truck) and talking with the salesman simply call and give him your LOW figure -$7000 from his $41,455. 00, and expect them to come considerably closer than$3655. 00 to make a deal on a 02 model.

If they are ready to move it they will let you know.

As others have said let them know NICELY that you are willing to look around (my last buying experience I benefitted from not being brand loyal, I was straight-out shopping for the best bang for the buck(I got lucky on both brand and $ with my current ride)).

You have the money, they want it! Good luck!

Wayne, from what I have seen, even from the one price, high volume dealers like Melton Sales, that is a good price for an 03.

1 Buck over

How does this work? What do the dealers call it? Is this seperate from the $350 dealer holdback I read about in a different topic?

Check out; Dave Smith Gm/Chrysler, Kellogg, Idaho,

1 800 635 8000.

Their showroom is just like a tele-marketers boiler room, no vehicles, just office cubicles with salesmen taking phone orders.

If you are talking with a dealer within 600-700 miles from Kellog and tell them that you are comparing prices with Dave Smith they run you out of their showroom!

Hi kmiller:

Sorry for taking so long to respond to your question; been out playing on the lake (Lake Havasu, AZ) with our kids from California :)

Take a small trip via the internet over to www.edmunds.com and then click on the tab called 'advice'. From there you can check out the 10 things you should know before you go to a dealer shopping for a truck. After that click on the kind of truck you want i. e. DODGE Ram 3500, QC,STL, Diesel, etc and it will tell you what the 'Dealer Hold back' fee is on that vehicle. When I checked today it was 3%.

I think what you are asking is 'what is a Dealer Holdback?' Try this link which is a pretty good explaination:

http://www.edmunds.com/advice/incentives/holdback/index.html

Oh and before I forget you might also want to check out www.kbb.com (Kelly Blue Book) for additional information on new and used vehicles and how to get some good deals. So much information - so little time :)

Happy shopping

Tom G.
