Well guys this is one of the quickest spooling big turbo's I have tried so far without a doubt. It will spool from 4lbs cruising to 40 lbs in about 2 seconds or at least as fast as you can push down on the go pedal. I am working on some waste gate modifications so it will work for pulling heavy loads as well, and will test it this weekend with the trailer in tow. The EGT's empty in 5th gear pulling at full throttle up hill at 3k RPM's were 1200 degrees. So far this is the one I am keeping at least until the twins are born.

Forrest, Yes it is a 16 housing. I had a PDR HX-35 with a 16 as well and the EGT's under the same conditions were about 200 or so degrees higher and the spool up was slower. I think you can send your HX-40 to Piers and have it modified. I would be worth it for sure.

Wait a minute.

Did you say the 40 had a faster spool up than the PDR35? Without ravealing any of Piers magic, how is that possible?

Sounds like I need to start saving my spare change.

Blair, I'm running the same turbo on my 24 valve. (Thanks, Piers & family :D) It does spool up a lot quicker. I'm able to compare it to a completely stock, unmodified Hx40 I used to run. This one is definitely better. Way better. However the spoolup is not quick enough for me to see much benefit on the dragstrip. I believe they spool up a lot faster on the 12 valve engines, like you have. From all the experience fooling around with Eric's Stack'd 'n' Jack'd 12 valve, before it got a set of twins, I really think it's a heckuva turbo to run on a 12 valve.

I haven't tried all my tricks yet with this one, haven't had time. I haven't disabled or adjusted the wastegate, or installed an elbow to see how well it'd do. I'm suspicious I'm losing boost, that's my clue the wastegate is letting a bit much go by too soon.

I got to say though, it HAULS ..... I towed 14,000 lbs up a mountain in Tennessee recently, and at 65mph, it still had a LOT of throttle left, and some more room to spare on EGT's.

Awesome turbo for trailering, perhaps even sled pulling... :D

Good point Tom, Yes the 12 valve trucks seem to spool up much quicker than the 24's do. I made my own boost elbow so that the waste gate opens later, with the standard boost elbow the boost went to high. It is hard to believe but IMO it does spool quicker than my 35 16cm2. I can't wait to tow tonight !!!! I am going to put this turbo on a 24 valve truck next week so I will have a 24 valve report with the exact same turbo.

I'm just curious, is there anyone with this turbo thats taken it to the dragstrip more then once? And launched it hard? (15psi)?

I've got a 4. 5" downpipe now so it would be a pain for me to try this turbo right now... thats why I am asking. . instead of trying it myself.

Hey Dee, I seem to work on everyone elses truck and mine has to wait sometimes. Actually this turbo is going on someone eleses truck I just wanted to dail in the waste gate first to make it better for towing. I will probably buy one though to use untill I get the twins done, I think it is going to take a while to make that happen.

I'm not after a quicker spool up as much as lower EGT. I wonder if the Piers HX40-18 has the equivalent spool up as the stock HX40-16. It would sure have less EGT.

BP,

I too have the PDR hx40 and love the thing. Piers has a good and resonable priced product. I cant seem to kill mine at all. I tow about 8k daily now and no problems at all.

Piers has a winner in the HX40 super.

Don~

HEMI®Dart: So far I like it the best!! The price is also the cheepest. I have had it on for a week now, I just didn't want to post right away I wanted to make sure my findings were right and I was just not overly excited about a new turbo.

Forrest: I think I remember Piers saying just that, The 18 will spool like a stock 16.

Hey Kat: I know Piers beats on his daily but I better let him answer that question. I am not sure it is advertised as a race turbo, as long as you keep the boost where it needs to be I guess it should be OK.

I have been contemplating a PDR HX40 (especially after a conversation w/HEMI®Dart). I originally wanted a PDRHX35 but because I have an HY turbo, The cost (with the housing) is the same as a 40

My question is. What do you find is relatively safe boost with the HX40's (bombed or not) and what kind of boost are you seeing with the PDR HX40.

Piers is the man!

Kevin

Piers says 40psi, Mine hits 45 so a little tuning is still required. I am putting this turbo on a truck in the next few weeks that has an HY on it so I will let you know how it goes. The truck has Stage II injectors and a comp box.

Just got off the phone with Al @ PDR.

They have 5 PDR HX40's in stock!

Just for your info.

HEMI®Dart: Buy a new PDR HX40 and I'll take (for a price) yours and send it to them for thier magic. ;)

Just an Idea. :p

Its not max boost I am worried about. Its the going from 10lbs of boost to max boost in under a second that bothers me. I wonder if his oiling tricks have made the shaft durable? I'm not changing turbos or nuthing... ... just wondering is all.

I'd like to point out that I didn't break a stock Hx40. Despite having the wastegate disabled. Despite running it hard for several months with a Kwikspool-style 12cm2 housing (furnished by TST) on it, including drag racing and towing a trailer... BTW, does that make me the only one to not blow up a Kwikspool type Hx40? Maybe the TST housing was sized differently.

The improvements Piers has made to his Hx40 are after extensive consultation with Holset engineers ... . in person.

It's got his name on it. No worries. :D It's fun, works as advertised. Don't really see how I can break this one unless I do something stupid.

So, I've never really been all that wary of Hx40's , the way a lot of people are. No offense meant, I'm only trying to say, it's time to take another look at these 40's.
