anyone have any comments on this turbo.

I am looking for something reasonable to lower egt's. I only have a #6 plate and DD stage 2 injectors. The only time I get too hot egt's is when pulling my 10,000 lbs fifthwheel up hill. I have to back out of it to get the temps down instead of getting on it to get up the hills quicker. I know I have more power here and would love to use all of it. I don't think I need a real fancy turbo with my light fueling mods and this PDR unit looks like it might be agood fit.

Any comments?

Jerry

From what I have read a pdr with a nongated 14 is supposed to spool like a 12 but move a bit more air for lower egts. Its supposed to be good on slightly modded trucks. It uses a compressor housing 2mm larger in diameter than stock in a specially machined compressor housing.

I'm trying to learn more about turbos.

Why do you not need a waste gate on some turbos?what happens to the excess pressure if it builds too much boost.

Also ,is the PDR kinda like the HTT hybrids? I was also looking at them also.

The turbo on your truck has a 12cm sq cross sectional area and with the wastegate open should flow approximately like a 14cm. The spool up time with a 12 is less than a larger housing but it is more restrictive leading to more back pressure. A larger housing flows more air at higher revs so it produces more horsepower but may produce more smoke upon acceleration. That's why on the HPCR trucks they only have a 9 cm housing for better emmissions. You can buy a 14 gated housing but they are over twice as much as a non gated housing. You can go this route as well. Talk to the guys at PDR as to what they would recommend in you situation. If you plan to add more power in the future the gated housing may be the way to go. On my '93 I went from a 18cm non gated to a 16 cm non gated to decrease spoolup and add more air for more fuel. Some people put on a 16 non gated housing to reduce egts and get more power. MPG should increase with a larger housing but slower spoolup. Turbo technology now has increased mapwidth turbos that spool up quick but that flow more air. Most are sold with the compressor size in the name ie 62, 66, etc. The B-1 series of turbos are also supposed to work good on the 5. 9L. I guess it comes down to bang for your buck, service, and future upgradeability if you get bit by the bug that most guys around these here parts have come in too close of contact with. Do a search on all off the different turbos that guys are using. Keep in mind that the 12V engines are different than the 24v variety in what turbo does things best. Good luck and spend the time to do the research as it usually pays off. I would also like to try a PDR HX 35 but funds are kinda low. I'm curious as to what you end up doing.

I would have chosen a 10 plate not the 6 to run with a small turbo with injectors and towing 10 k much more controllable temps. The pdr35w14 will take a good beating and keep on goin

thanks for the input. ididn't have the fifthwheel when I started bombing so I went with what tst recomended. Iprobanly won't do much more after the turbo ,now Ihave three year old triplets so my funds are low too. I'll call PDR andHTTand see what they think. Thanks again guys.

Three year old triplets, you must have your hands full. It doesn't look like you have one yet but a set of 3kgsk is supposed to really help the automatic trucks. I guess they like to see a #10 plate with the springs to. Talk to pdr and they should send you in the right direction.

I do have the 3k gsk just haven't had time to install it yet. From what I hear it does really wake up the truck. I'm not sure if I'm going to like it though, it alredy sounds like the truck is screaming at 2300 rpm I can't imagine what it is going to sound like at 3000. Thats why I'm going after a different turbo to try to get the temps down in the 1700-2000 rpm range which is where I usually am when I tow.

And yes we do have our hands full,( my wife more than me cause she's home with them all day while I'm at work)

hi, you'll like the 3kgsk, it really helps when you want to accelerate beyond the normal constraints... sure, engine is loud at that point, but i doubt you'll be cruising around at 3200 rpm... So, if you cruise at 70mph, at 2300rpm, it'll be the same decible as before the 3kgsk... .....

I wouldn't do with out it on my truck, . 02c :D

Find some post from Jim Fulmer. His truck is 98 2-wheel drive auto. He runs a #6 plate 3k springs plus some sticks and I believe II sp66 turbo. Now you might not need that size of a turbo but I believe he is controlling the EGT's pretty well. Maybe Jim will chime in.

With his setup of a #6, 3K's and stage 2 injectors I would run a regular 62 or a SPS 62 from Industrial Injection. This is the biggest well mannered turbo out today! There not cheap but you won't have to buy it twice, or a turbo twice.
