I got one coming to go on my truck. Anything I need to be aware of for the install. What is the break in? How do you pre-oil the turbo. Any input would be appreciated. Also 4 inch exhaust and stage 3 injectors.

I installed mine myself, took me two days. The downpipe is not easy, I could not get the bottom bolts loose on my HX35 so I took the entire exhaust manifold off with the trubo attached, pre oil the turbo by pouring some oil in the hole where the ss line hooks to the trubo and then spinning the internals by hand - repeat. The break in is acomplished by not driving like an insane lunatic for 10 hours or so. I tried not to drive at a constant RPM for the 10 hours too. No WOT runs and dont blib the peddle either. Every thing you do needs to be smooth.....

Really it was not a big job, just a little hard to do in the driveway in the rain by my self... good luck.

I would consider installing an ATS 3 piece manifold, the factory ones are known to crack. And besides, you're already there. If you do, stop by Cummins and get the gaskets because they don't come with the manifold. They're around 20 bucks. I got my manifold from Ken Jones at Diesel Performance, his price is cheaper than anyone I know. Anyway to lube the turbo, install it and remove all the plastic plugs. Connect the oil return line on the bottom of the turbo, add the oil into the top (oil Pressure side) and turn the turbine wheel. I wouldn't hammer the 40 untill about 50 or so miles. This will allow the turbo to have been spooled up from stop and go driving. OH! I almost forgot... ... . This is a biggie! Install the boost elbow BEFORE you install the turbo. The 40 has different linkage to the wastegate and is REALLY close to the fuel filter base. The boost elbow is REALLY close and not, but next to impossible when it 's installed. If you don't you might/will have wished you would have. My truck was basically new when I did my bombing, and everything was really clean and not rusted up. So I guess it took me about a half a day to put the turbo, exhaust manifold and 4" exhaust on. I did have to have a buddy hold the downpipe up while I screwed the clamp to the turbo. Ken says he can and has done it by himself, but I couldn't:{ If you have any problems, I'm sure that most anyone of us here on TDR would be glad to help/give directions to you. You will be so :D A 40 is a wonderful thing! Good Luck and have fun, I'm sure you will!

I got an ats manifold from Piers and it came with new gaskets. I babied my PDR HX40 for the first mile or so then I tortured it. The exhaust manifold took longer tha the turbo/4" exhaust install. I got big hands and I ended up using the stock bolt on the bottom of the exhaust on #2 as I could not get the allen wrench on that bolt without removing those coolant lines. Oo.

Can I Hyjack this thread?

I have a hx40 waiting for me also Peirs recomends a 40 after 350 hp How well will it work with dd2's with box off? I am not over 350 with just injectors and I don't want to run with comp on all the time! Will there be a lot of lag?

Thanks

Craig

Mike,

Have you swapped out turbo's before? If not make sure you have some bolt loosener handy and get a long 15mm box wrench for the underside bolts on your turbo.

Do make sure you preoil the turbo and break it in smoothly...

If you need help, give me a call. I'd be more then happy to help out. As the guys above said... the downpipe is the pain.

One last bit. Don't forget to change your trans shift points and I would call Bill K and ask him if you should have to increase your line pressure in the trans a bit to insure you have no slippage. Just a thought.

Re: Can I Hyjack this thread?

I run my trucks all the time with the box off and the only truck that is a little laggy is the 5spd with 35" tires and 3. 55 gears. I had DD2's in my '01 ETH and I hardly ever turned the box on. Just to pass people while towing. You'll see boost start about 1400-1500rpms.

Kevin, I have someone else lined up to put the turbo and exhaust on this week. Next Sunday at the RMTDR wrench day I'll put the stage 3 injectors in and then I'll get a hold of Laser Bob about any transmission stuff. Love that DTT stuff. Truck should run pretty good after this stuff.
