Last week i installed pdr modified hx35 on my 92 ctd and i am confused with the results. My cruising boost is down about 1 pound, Wide open boost is about the same as before (23#). Cool down time seems to take a little bit longer than before. Turbo lag seems about the same and acceleration is about the same as before the turbo. The only real difference with the new turbo is the turbo whistle is more now. Does anyone have any ideas why i am not getting the same results as everybody else that switched to the pdr hx35?

what exactly did Piers do to it... i just bought a hx35 and was wondering what they do to it that makes it so much better... or in your case. . worse?

Its has a bigger compressor fan, better lubrication and balance. I talked to Al at pdr and told him about my results and he said maybe i need to turn power up a little, but i would think that boost and spool-up would be more even without turning up power. Other people on this sight noticed more boost and better spool-up without other changes--- just installing the turbo.

If i was you I would just talk to Piers himself, not that Al does not know what he's talking about, but I'm with you, something is not right. I would think your egt's would be lower and spool up should be faster, but at least it has a louder whistle;) , I know Piers has some very reasonable prices, but for the money you spent you should see some improvements. Piers won't play games with you, he'll make sure your happy:D

On a 92 we gained 10psi & incredibly faster spool up going from the stock WC1 to the PDR Hx35, with no other modifications. (same housing 12cm, pump settings, & injectors POD's) Something is not right with the turbo you received.

Have you done a pressure check of the intake system, maybe some of your boost is escaping some where? Also check that your inter-cooler is getting good air flow ie no weeds/bugs in the cooling fins.

So is the PDR HX35 pretty much the best aftermarket turbo? I am confused. One of these days (this summer) I would like to get a new turbo.

There is no such thing as "best". It does depend on what you plan to do with the truck. But the PDR HX35 is a great deal. You should call PDR. There are other companies out there (such as Bell Turbo) that will build you whatever turbo you want, but things can get expensive.

Although i haven't noticed a difference in boost pressure after installing the pdr hx-35, i have noticed a reduction of smoke when i hit throttle hard. Also, it seems more responsive than before but not a real noticable difference like some others have noticed. It could be that i'm not running the power as some of the other members who have installed the pdr hx-35 and just getting such a small difference that i don't notice it as much. Im told that the big difference in this turbo occurs when running over 25 # boost where the stock turbo starts to loose efficiency. I am going to turn power up a bit and check for intercooler leaks and see if that makes a difference. I sure love the turbo whistle that the new turbo makes.

Rdodd, I would check your air piping system for leaks. I work on cummins engines everyday, and if the complaint is performance, on of the first things we will check is the CAC and all of the pipes and clamps. You can look at your clamps, CAC, and even your intake manifold gaskets all day long and think they are tight, but intill you check them... you know. Of course this is not easy, and requires some stuff that I hope to make in my spare time. Also check your AFC line rubber grommets, or even replace them as after dinner mints for your truck :D If they are leaking even a little, your fuel pump will not be letting the maximum amount of fuel out. Seriously though, I would bet that you have a boost leak some where, I was watching my EGT's on a long drive last year, and I was thinking that the gauge looked a little "lazy", got home found one of my clamps was loose, tightened it, ran like new.

I really don't have a power complaint as the truck performs pretty well and it runs just as well now as always, but after installing the new pdr hx-35 i just expected to see more boost than before like others switching to this turbo.

rdodd; If it makes you feel any better I've had mine on for a year and a half and I had nearly identical results to what your describing. My max boost went up 1-2 psi, overall egts were down 50-100 degrees and spoolup was about the same or a bit better. I think people who get better results could have stock turbos that are worn out more than ours.

I think from a performance stand point don't expect too much from a PDR-hx35 but if your going to upgrade or replace your worn out turbo then this is the way to go. Kurt
