PE Comp Installed -

Got the PE Comp and Autometer gauges installed last night/today. Seems great so far. I can get around 25 lbs boost empty, with little smoke unless in 4-5 with the sub-setting high. I have a ?? about EGT though. The instructions that came with the pyro said for turbocharged engines put the thermocouple after the turbo, I did and the hottest it will get is about 800-900. That seems too low, should I move the thermocouple to the manifold? Or is this normal? Suggestions for next upgrade welcome!! :D Thanks!!

the instructions said post turbo ??? i would put it pre turbo as there is no set number for the difference between pre and post , never mind throwing in the inaccuracy of the gauge .

my vote is move it pre .

as far as next mod ... your clutch will let you know soon enough , but if the clutch is holding a switch to bigger injectors will fix that ...

25psi ??? isn't that the boost level of the stock eth ? did you install the adjustable elbow for the wastegate ? you should be seeing upwards of 35psi in the highest levels

next dumb question did you connect the pump wire ??

I agree with Mopar-muscle, I just installed a PE Comp and I see no smoke on level 4/3, but will with anything above that. My pyro is pre turbo and I hit 1429 and 39lbs boost.

The guages are Autometer, and it did say post, I asked around and people local said that so you can tell when it is O. K. to shut it down without coking the oil in the turbo. I have a tractor with the 8. 3 Cummins and a factory pyro and it is post-turbo, But I agree with you guys, I'm moving it today into the manifold.

About the pump wire, I did hook it up, I assume I got it right because it will leave a pretty good smoke trail until boost is up in the higher settings, will it anyway with the wire unhooked? It feels pretty strong, I can get a little chirp from the tires going into 3rd. But I haven't seen above 28 lbs yet on the boost guage, and it just stays there for a second. I assumed it was because I am empty, no load. I'll double check the line for leaks, and hose clamps under the hood.

Adjustable elbow? I had a guy helping me and I never looked at the elbow, he installed it while I was putting in the comp, I'll have a look at that, maybe it needs adjusting. Didn't know you could adjust it!

Clutch is holding fine, sounds like I need DD2's to help with that problem.

No, no... DD 3's :D:D:D Might as well spend the extra $100 now, rather than go from DD 2's to DD 3's in a few months for several hundred $$

By the way, I ordered a Hot Comp box this week, can't wait to install it. Woo-Hoo!!!

:D    :D

MGC:

I know you said you have Auto-Meter, so i don't know about them. But i do know that Isspro makes two different pyro's, one that is for pre-turbo, and one that is post-turbo.

Stick :)

Update

Well, I rechecked everything, couldn't find anything wrong, moved the pyro to pre-turbo and drove it all day as normal. THEN tonight I ate supper and went BACK out and romped on it again. This time... . 31 psi boost and 1400+ egt(for a short while). Thats more like it. I don't know why it was so much less yesterday, I wonder if the pump wire didn't get pierced good or something, and it finally made good contact. Anyway I like it.

As far as the DD3's go, I am already at the limit as far as EGT's go, I assume with DD3's I'll need an HX40 or something similar? How do you cool it down? Ahh the fun!!! I'll never buy a gasser again. I'm just getting started but this beats the crap out of trying to make a gasser run like this. My old 5. 9 V8 Ram feels like its parking brake is stuck on after driving the diesel now. Thanks the suggestions!!

There may be no set number... but you will always get a lower EGT temp post turbo... can be as much as 300-400 degrees lower. Actually, there is a formula for figuring this out, but who has the time... ;)

I'm jealous. I was hopeing the box in my sig below would have shown up today. Guess I have to wait till nextweek. Should have paid for Fed Ex.

Help on the Intake side

MGC, what have you done on the intake side? I would seriously consider a K&N or Amsoil filter or the Big Honking Air Filter. Although many argue the stock filter doesn't hurt HP, certainly improved airflow does help with EGTs.

One thing you can do right this minute is go out and pop the hood, then removed the snorked that goes between your fender and airbox. That piece contributes some restriction on the intake side for sure.

As far as your clutch, you may be one of the lucky ones who has a healthy stocker. I haven't been able to break mine loose with 323hp/661tq, and then after I dynoed that I added the Bullydog CPC and still haven't gotten it to slip. But the SBC is waiting in my closet

I borrowed a K&N today and pulled out the snorkel, man that changes the sound of things! It looks like that was good for about 50 degrees less EGT's. It *SEEMS* to have helped the turbo spool up quicker, but I could be being fooled by the new sound. You guys with experience..... how much will a 4 in exhaust system help? I'm now guessing that needs to come BEFORE injectors. Thanks !!

Gas mileage sure has suffered. I can't keep my foot out of it now! I've found it's more fun to watch the high numbers on the boost gauge and pyro than on the trip-computer mpg deal. I'm sure when I get my fuel bill that will change a little though.
