I installed a Comp today and was hoping to get a little smoke... . nope. Shouldnt I be seeing smoke at level 5 even though I only have 275's? I can't feel much of a difference at any level. My Bill K. TC made a huge impact and I was hoping for the same for the comp. Is there a way you can tell if these things are working right?

Have you set the sub-menu for level 5?

Your Comp direction should tell you how to do it. You should have smoke if the sub-menu is also set on level 5.

I wonder if you got the pump prick wire installed properly, just a thought being you say you don't notice any difference between any levels.

Yes I have the sub menu at five. What kind of smoke are you talking about? smoke at idle or only when flooring it? A little or a lot? I think I got the prick right. .

If you have 275's and the PE Comp, you should have lots of smoke when starting from a stop with medium to heavy throttle prior to boost buildup. Once the boost builds, smoke is gone.

Also, if you don't notice the difference between level one and level five, something has got to be wrong. You should call Edge and get some help. Don't give up or get too frustrated. I installed my injectors and Comp box six weeks ago and haven't stopped smiling yet. I am getting 21 MPG commuting to work/running around. This is a 2 1/2 MPG improvement which only adds to the smile. :D :D

Just curious, is this milage figured by hand on paper, or are you taking it from the overhead console reading? I just can't imagine someone driving "Sanely" enough to gain mpg after adding a COMP. Not doubting you, just curious is all, hell I commend you on your willlpower, no way could I drive the same after adding power, unless its a bliazzard out then I slow down a lil.

DCouch,

Double check all of your connections especially the wire prick on the injection pump wire. Make sure it is on the correct wire, and make sure it is making a good connection.

I would also check all other connections.

You should see a significant difference from level one to level 5. And yes, you will see some smoke in low-boost situations.

First thing first. Check all of the connections and if you still do not see any improvement, please give us a call and either Doug or myself will be more than happy to help you find the problem.

Mileage with the Comp

I am really impressed with your mileage gain with the Comp. I have noticed a 1-mpg increase with the Comp set at level one cruising down the interstate. The only problem is that I can't keep myself from pushing those little arrows and putting my foot through the firewall:D :D :D

Eric

p. s. Smokes like a freight train at low boost.

the reason for the MPG gain with any box is that on higher level settings they mask more of the ECM signal to the pump, and use their own, more precise signalling to tell the pump how much, and and I some cases, when.

its that simple, if you leave the box on high, and the go pedal on low, the result is better MPG's

I have averaged 18. 9MPG with my truck TOTAL. thats overall towing, not towing, hotrodding, and grannying it. 18. 9MPG

my best tank has been 20. 99MPG and my worst has been 13. 4MPG

in the summer my per tank mileage is around 560 miles per tank. which comes out to be around 20MPG. and yes, KAT I do it the long way. I record all mileage. keep track of each tank with the trip meter on the odometer and divide that into how many gallons i buy at each fillup. I keep all my records on a sreadsheet that i created to keep track of best tank, worst tank, overall MPG, overall gallons bought, cost per gallon, average overall cost per gallon and overall cost to date.

the trick is, my PM3 is set to level 9 and I ripped the knob off of it. :D

I drive 65miles a day to/from work at 60-70MPH, on a two lane highway, and passing is manditory. :D

Self control is on again-off again

Kat,

Perhaps I should clarify. 21 MPG was obtained on a tankful where the box was left exclusively on setting one and a light right foot utilized to see what mileage could be acheived with the new injectors and box. I have as much "kid" in me as the rest of you and will readily give in to the temptation to mash the throttle.

The one thing that is helping me avoid this temptation is my stock clutch. It will slip on setting four or five if I push it. As soon as I can afford and install a South Bend clutch, my mileage will probably be as bad as yours. ;)

Towing with Comp

Sky,

I tow my horse trailer dry (4800lbs) at level one with my II's. I can run as high as level three without even looking at my EGT's. I just don't need that much power (level three or above) because I just get into trouble.

Hope this helps,

Eric

Level one

Sky,

Level one on the Comp is the same as the EZ as far as fueling and timing. The Comp has the advantage over the EZ that it has five smoke (boost) levels as to the EZ's three.

Eric

Sky,

I apologize for the misunderstanding. The Comp is the same as the EZ on level one. The Comp does have the four additional levels of fueling through the pump wire similar to the PE. The Comp is much more powerful than just the EZ, but not as powerful as the EZ piggybacked with a hot PE. I really enjoy the flexibility of the in-cab controls of the Comp.

Hope this helps,

Eric

Thanks!

So the comp on level 1 is the same as the EZ on level 3? Just to clarify.

How many levels are on the comp and what is the hp rateing or increase for ech level?

Sorry to be a pain.

Sky,

Don't worry about asking lots of questions. That is the only way I learned. Let me first explain something about the EZ. It always adds the same amount of fuel and timing regardless of the setting. The setting determines at what boost level the EZ will add the fuel. The higher the setting, the lower the boost level. I believe level 3 is 2lbs of boost. The setting will give you move fuel sooner, but will also smoke more. These settings let you choose how much smoke you want. The Comp has five total setting for fuel. Each level providing more fuel that the previous. Level one on the Comp is the same amount of fuel as an EZ. Now, within each level on the Comp, there are five sub-levels for what level of boost you want the extra fuel to come in at. Again, the higher the setting the earlier the fuel comes on and the more smoke you get. The great thing about he Comp is that you can have different sub-levels (boost) for each power level. I currently run level one with sub level one so that I don’t smoke too much just driving around town. Now, I also have level five set at sub level five so when I want to go fast, I have almost immediate power. The Comp remembers what sub-level you have for each setting so you only have to program it once. It is a great box. I hope you enjoy yours like I enjoy mine.

HP ratings

Sky,

As far as the hp ratings go, Diesel Dynamics has the only dyno chart that I have seen for the Comp (they call it the Ultimate Power Module). They did dyno runs with DDII's and a HX-40 so I don't know what you can expect on your truck. If anyone else has some dyno runs with Comp, I would be very interested to know what kind of hp you were making. I know that I can slip my stock clutch on level three or above if I want to.

Eric

Here is the dyno chart from Diesel Dynamics

Diesel Thunder in Spokane

I was on the Dyno at Diesel Thunder in Spokane last Saturday (Aug. 18th). My result are as follows;

My Comp, 453. 5 HP, 885. 9 ft/lbs of torque

My Hot #3

PE and EZ, 458. 5 HP, 871. 8 ft/lbs of torque

Bill Kondalay's

Drag Strip Comp, 460. 1 HP, 857. 0 ft/lbs of torque

I was surprised of the consistancy of the output of these boxes, all within 6. 6 HP!

These run were on a Dyno-Jet Dyno.
