Penetrating oil Choice

Getting ready for my Winter Project this year, Have another post on parts washer solvent, and im looking at my choice of Penetrating oil. I have always used WD 40 with good results, I buy a gallon jug and spray bottle.

This years winter project is a 67 year old tractor that was put in the barn when my Grandfather died, I was 10 or 11 years old and not touched again until I picked it up summer last. The first motorized thing I can remember driving was this tractor, Mom came out to the corn field seen me driving it by myself and got after Gramps pretty hard, Gramps about 5ft nothing said Damn Jane the boy's bigger than I am let him be!!

So I can imagine that some if not all the bolts are going to need some help to get them off cleanly, When I do things like this I like to use the same bolts in the same places, takes a large amount to zip lock bags with labels inside to keep track of **** Most times I know what im going to do the next day and shoot some WD on the bolts and let it sit overnight, and then again while I get things ready to work that day (aka get the radio going, drink some coffee, put some wood in the barrel stove)

The bolts don't look to rusted but who really knows? until a guy tries to take them off!!

Any thoughts on your choice of penetrating oil is welcomed

I mostly use WD 40. But, I have also been using PB Blaster at times. I like it better for the really rusted bolts or anything that has been exposed to heat.......exhaust manifold bolts, etc.

Kroil is simply the best penetrating oil, followed by PB Blaster. But really, for removing stubborn nuts and bolts, Kroil is in a class of it's own!!!
There are people who claim that a mix of ATF and acetone in a 50/50 solution out performs any penetrating oil. I have tried it, it is certainly inexpensive, and while it works, I do not see much differnece from other penetrating oils. It also quickly evaporates unless you keep it in a well sealed jar.

I use ATF/acetone 50:50 I find it better then kroil ( I did purchase and try Kroil)and cheaper then all the rest some add another ingredient but this alone has worked for me. freed up many things including a rusted up bike change my boy didn't think was salvageable, and some screw type house jacks all now working fine. simple give it a try

I use mostly PB Blaster and WD 40, but not really for the same purpose. PB is my usual penetrant with wd being more a of a low residue cleaner. IMO, PB is for stuck bolts and wd is for door hinges, lock cylinders, and squealing belts. There are certainly other brands which work well, but those two a readily available and competitively priced.

I don't use PB on any fastener I intend to re- use. I find PB tends to corrode nuts and bolts after removal and storage. I vote for Kroil.

Brownells even sells it as a bore cleaner.

I found a product years ago that is not made anymore called Lubrilon I came across around 1987. It was the best lube metal to metals sliding ease for longevity, parts loosening, metal protector against rust, and everything you ever wanted in a lubricant. It even worked as a bullet lube and added 100 fps to my 30.06 Nosler Partitions 180 gr. reloads and my hunting partners 300 Weatherby 200 gr. reloads. This Lubrilon was the best all around lube I had ever used for any service required since I started back in the 60's as a mechanic, through the 70's and was on as service manager for a full line GM store through the 80's. Anyway, I was on my last can Lubrilon of it because I always buy quantity when I find something good especially if I think it may not always be available. Last year I ordered a couple of cans of Amsoil spray called Heavy Duty Metal Protector. It smells, looks like, and works identical to my old Fav Lubrilon. I've been using it for all my old parts metal loosening and lubrication on my 79 CJ-5's I'm working on now. I ordered 2 cases so that will last me awhile. wd40 attracts dust and dirt on a small scale and is short lived is good for spraying inside of flooded distributor caps for spark however. I have an original Buck Folding Hunter Knife that I carried on the belt every day from 73- 2005, when I was using wd-40 or any other miracle lube they all lasted a month or two at the most to keep the blade open smoothly. The Lubrilon lasted a year or better before I would have to re-lube the pivot point on the knife. Wore out 3 blades since I've owned it and all I have to do when they wear out is pay for the postage for shipping to Buck and they install new blades no charge. Time will tell on this HD Metal Protector, and don't try the "MP Metal Protector" it's allot thinner and is more like wd40 imo. Be sure that it is the "Heavy Duty Metal Protector" for yourself. And no I am not a dealer or any of that when I need to stock up I go direct to Amsoil.com, buy a year's subscription and they pay the shipping. Have Fun.

4 equal parts of (I use 1gal tin and keep lid on tight to dispense into smaller spray bottle) diesel, acetone,AT oil, mineral spirits. It will equal or better the best on the market at a fraction of the cost.

Best penetrant. Hands down I have ever used is the Mopar Graphite "heat riser solvent". Best ever. I've used lots of stuff, but never kroil. The Mopar stuff I do have on special reserve, but for most jobs at home, and on the job we use a 50/50 mix of WD40 and Marvel mystery oil. You already have the gallon of WD and the spray bottle, just grab some marvel (I bet you have that too) and mix it 50/50 in the sprayer. It's also a great protectant and tool cleaner.
Years ago, I was given a can of "magnum" by CRC. Green can. Teflon based, It was the best long lasting lube for door hinges and the casement windows in the house. I can't find that anymore. Has anyone heard of it?

I had forgotten all about Mopar heat riser penetrant. Been around for 40 years. I remember it being so expensive, compared to run of the mill products , my boss used to keep it in his office.

It might be that and more. It has a certain scent, kinda foams out of the tube, and has warnings all over the can and case it comes in. I'm using it now in fact to hopefully loosen the header plate bolts on the Duster. They're countersunk 5/16 screws that are stubborn. Last step before big heat.

I am a big fan of the 50 50 aft and acetone mix. I do keep wd40 and PB blaster on hand, but use them for different purposes.

Had an old man tell me about Kroil years ago & at that time I had never heard of it, well after using it for years in my boat repair business, I`m sold on it. They`re out of Tn. & have a silicone based called Sili-Kroil. Glad I took the old man`s advice, he & the Kroil have made a believer out of me. Now I`m the old man to a lot of the people that I tell about the Kroil.
