After a couple of hours of research looking for an acceptable oil for my NV5600 transmissions I've found only 2 that meet the factory requirements beside the Morpar Manual Transmission fluid # 4874464.

That being an Amsoil product and the Pennzoil product... after 3 calls to Amsoil distributors for their Synchromesh Transmission fluid 30W and finding none on the shelf in town... . I finally called my local napa store... . $7. 64 a qt and they had 5 qts in one store and the other 20 stores and the DC didn't have it in stock... . we than called at least 4 other suppliers in Spokane WA and we found 1 independent parts store with 1 qt on the shelf... . not enough to change the oil... . Shucks and Autozone = 0 on the shelf... .

The Pennzoil web sight actually shows the Mopar part number as an interchange for their product... and the Amsoil sight sort of implied it would work... .

I also found a report done by a guy who is using 15W-30 Mobil 1 15,000 mile engine oil in his transmission with good results...

Thought this was interesting since we have close to 300,000 people in this town with 2 of the largest Dodge dealer within 90 minutes of here... . Dave Smith and Dishman Dodge...

BTW - I see this as an oil post, not a transmission post... hope its in the right place.

Same thing up here Jim,could not find any---i run Redline MTL now in mine with no problems but some other/members have varying results with the Redline---it works for me,so far. Another option like "Redline" is "Royal Purple" but i don"t think they are approved as a O. E. M. replacement fluids---and correct me if i'm wrong(Wayne---Amsoil Man can chime in anytime)but Amsoil is not O. E. M. approved either. This is what i did. DW

I used the Pennzoil Syncromesh in my 02 3500 for five years with good results, but it's hard to find six quarts when you need it! No metal bits and very little magnetic muck were ever found on the magnet, and the trans always shifted really smooth.

You can probably get the Amsoil by UPS within 2 days or so.

I usually have enough on the shelf for one oil change, but I'm not local to you.

I got the synchromesh from my local parts store, however I do know you can order it on-line on Amazon.com for $8. 99 per quart. I paid about $7. 99 at the local store. If you can't find it locally order it on-line and pay a little bit for the shipping. My two cents.

Jim --

Just changed the fluid in my NV5600 yesterday. Picked up 5 qts of Pennzoil Syncromesh Manual Transmission Fluid 3501 at local Autozone (all they had). It was between $5-6 per qt. (much less than the ~$8 I'd seen on the net) can't tell from the receipt as the synthetic 75W-90 gear oil leaked on it and is surprisingly effective at removing the ink. They were supposed to re-order and call me when more came in. No calls from them in the past 3 business days since I asked them to order it.

NV5600 capacity is supposed to be 9. 5 pts, but after draining it overnight I could only add ~ 8 pts. via the 17 mm fill port.

2 years on Pennsoil, Trans seems to like It, Gets better shifting
with use...
I had same problem finding enough for a fluid change,
Picked it up in several stores ( computer must control stock qty ).

Best to plan ahead and get it over a period of time as you are in the auto parts stores ( thanks for the reminder ).

Bob... I hope you aren't telling us you put the 75W90 in your transmission... . there is a specific Pennzoil lube for the NV5600 and its not the 75W90 that most places have on the shelf...

The correct Pennzoil product doesn't have a weight class on the container and specifically says its for the mopar # 4874464 mentioned above... .

The reason for my thread was that the correct fluid was not available in my town except for 1 NAPA store... Please check the back of your container to make sure its the correct fluid... . I've heard that the 75W90 doesn't have the proper make up to suit our transmissions... the oil looks like a 15W30 motor oil...

I can tell you the AMSOIL "Manual Synchromesh Transmission Fluid

SAE 5W-30 Does infact meet the specs of Chrysler MS-9224 & Chrysler MS-9417.

I have provided a "Link" to the specs of this fluid if you are interested.

You can order this product DIRECT from Amsoil by calling 1-800-956-5695 M-Fr 7am to 5 pm Central time. The product will be sent directly to the address you provide.

I have 2-3 cases of this on hand, as I sell about two changes a Month here.

Jim,

I agree with you.

I have been using the Penzoil also in mine and yes it can be challenging to find on store shelves. I called a local Shell bulk oil distributor and they carried it in stock by the case, I have bought two cases so far. I have about 60K on my truck and I have changed the oil several times, I'm on my second case of Penzoil. I also am running the PTO cover oil filter from Geno's, no proof of positive or negative on the filter, but it sure looks like it trapped some junk.

IMHO, my truck is shifting better now than when it was newer, it think it's finally getting happy gears, syncro's and forks, not to mention a darn fine clutch, but we will not go there.

With all of the talk about adding a bit extra oil, when I change mine to add the extra, I run the drivers side up on my homemade 2X8 ramps this raises the drivers side and I can get some more in through the fill plug.

Gary... . good to hear from you... . did you ever take care of that clutch problem the customer had with the competitive product??

BTW we had an engineer from ZF-Sachs at the clinic who really shared a lot about the HD product they are building... . very helpful...

I finally got a call back today from the amsoil guys we left messages with yesterday... . none had their approved product on the shelf.....

Jim --

No worries it was for the differential, it just leaked on the receipt so I couldn't give you a real number for the Pennzoil Synchromesh price.

I just replaced all my filters and fluids as part of getting ready for winter road trips with my truck camper.

Autozone had the bests prices and availability on the 75W-90 Mobil 1 synthetic for the front differential, Pennzoil Synchromesh for the manual transmission and Valvoline ATF+4 for the manual transfer case.

NAPA had the best price and availability on the 75W-140W synthetic Mobil 1 LS for the rear differential (but wanted $14/qt for ATF+4 vs. $5. 10/qt at Autozone.

While I would like a synthetic in the transmission for easier initial shifting in winter, I really haven't had problems with the Pennzoil Synchromesh the last two years down to single digit *F temperatures and decided to stay with it. I just pick it up at Autozone prior to needing or ask them to order it if they are out.

Will just idle in 5th gear with the transfer case in neutral to warm the transmission fluid up prior to driving, like others here have suggested.

The Dodge specified oil says its for the NV3500 on the bottle, but it is the recommended fluid for the NV 5600 also. Are you sure your not looking for the stuff for the NV 4500? Its much harder to find and much more expensive. Give Standard transmission a call they have both at a good price. Ken Irwin

I don't mean to knock the Lucas product as, a lot of people like it. However, if you go to the (bob is the oil guy.com) web site, they have a test that they conducted on the Lucas product & found that it trapped a lot of air in the fluid. So much air was trapped that the fluid turned white from all the bubbles.

Their conclusion was that air is not a good lubricant!!!

Before using the Lucas, I, certainly, would check out that test & make your own decision.

Again, Lucas is a popular product in the big truck industry & I have nothing against the product, itself.

If you could help me out a little here. I want to change all my fluilds out in the Trans (NV5600), Transfer case (electric shift), and both differential's, as it is past due.

Up here the Amsoil is the easiest to get so I stick with it.

I can't find the capacities of what each component holds. The owners manual is useless.

What does the NV5600, the transfer case, and each differential specifically hold for oil capacities. So when I call the Amsoil I at least know how much to order.

Thanks for your help.

Me too. I almost never patronize Napa, Autozone, Pep Boys, etc. anymore - they never have the specialty stuff I want.

The local Pennzoil distributor carries all the Synchromesh I want to buy. And when I run out of CI-4+ oil, I'll go to them for more. Easy to deal with, good prices, very knowledgeable.

Ryan

There is CI-4+ oil that you can by. I get my oil at a NAPA it is Valvoline premium blue Classic it only comes in a 5gal pail the part # is 591839 This oil is for 06 down. They say not to use it in the 07 up.
