Anybody Work On A Ford V10?

Anybody use their units before or currently?

I'm looking at renting either a large straight truck or possibly a single axle tractor and short dry van trailer for a cross country move. Tandem tractors are an option as well---I don't need quite that much truck, but can/will use one if need be.

Have a CDL and experience, no issues there. Just looking for some feedback on their equipment, hidden charges, etc.

Have good things to say about other truck rental companies that aren't U-Haul, Budget, or Ryder? I'm listening.

Thanks in advance!

Dan-

Heh. I'll use darned near *ANYBODY* but U-Haul. I'd rant, but there are women & children, and other tender ears.

Personally, I've used Ryder in the past, and a local vendor when I was still outside of Chicago. Good experience both places.

If you're going with a company that does commercial leasing, you're probably ahead of the game.

Dan, they seem to stay on top of thier equipment more so then the others. Can't recall the last time I saw a Penske on the side of the road, now UHaul and Ryder are a different story. Only thing I see as a stumbling block with the penske deal is insurance concerns perhaps. . Oh, and last time I looked SD to WA. is not cross country!!!! :-laf

HEY NOW!! Watch it... it was 4 trips total by the way :( get it right Dammit !!!! Let's see 26 hrs... 1800 miles, damn, what was I thinking, plus the side trip too!!

LMAO!

I checked with Ryder and they don't offer one-way usage anymore--that part of their fleet is now tied in with Budget, who wants over $3,000 for a 22' truck. U-Haul wants over $3,600 for a 26' truck.

With Penske I can get a 26' truck for less than half of that, one way. If I lease a tractor/trailer the price goes up but still is less than 75% of what U-Haul wants for just a gas-powered (5mpg) straight truck.

It would be way easier to call North American or United and have all this done via a moving van, but my shop is full of machine tools, car parts, engines, and various other items that aren't stackable or boxable, and I'd rather do it myself than see most of my stuff arrive in pieces..... I've got the time, and actually would enjoy driving a truck across half the country. (Happy, Mark?)

The insurance topic is a good one--that was one of the first things I looked at. My agent said we're golden with the policy we currently have---good thing we didn't revise it like we thought about last year, or else it would be a different story... .

Keep the suggestions and ideas coming!

Have you checked with one of the local freight companies as most have now added a service to move household goods to fill their empty lanes. ABF Freight pioneered this in the bigger freight companies and heavily advertise it out here. You call them, they bring you a single pup,you load it,lock it and they drag it out where you need it. Its then brought to the place for unloading and when you empty it they pick up the trailer. Our company does it for the servicemen and women acroos the country all the time. The only difference with us is they will fill the trailers with more than one household shipment to make sure its full. If you want PM me a address from where you are now to where you want your goods to go and I will check with them Monday and see if it they have that option for you out there... ..... Andy

BTW. .

Home to Washington eh...

That sounds like a visit may be in order and both of us spend a evening enjoying SkaGit's heavy cushions.

I heard about the ABF U-Pack but didn't pay much attention to it. Will have to check more, thanks!

Pm'd you my address.

Yup, back home to Washington State--might have to do something at Skagit--you gotta supply the hot rod, though..... mine is in a billion pieces and the banker won't authorize the fundage for reassembly, prep, tuning, and all that crap.

(Now to hijack my own thread)

Did you hear about our promoter back home? Fred Brownfield... God Rest His Soul.

He died doing what he loved, though. I think getting up-ended by a 360 modified wasn't his ideal way to go, but pretty sure he went quickly and without suffering, which is good. He passed away Friday the 16th, I landed in Portland, OR at 12:16PM on the 17th... . was hoping to make the races that night, but my dad told me what happened and it kinda blew a huge hole in my weekend. :(

The CDL trucks have a home base as part of the tax/record keeping and as such are not available for a one way move(well you can do one way but then you have to pay for someone to drive it back to "home location"). Other requiremnet is that you have a corporate account set up with any of major truck companies to get a CDL truck (Penske, Ryder, Pac-Lease, Budget) with DOT numbers and insurance on record.

We rented Penske tractors for 5 years(8 times a year) they were the worst kept trucks major safety violations and I would never rent a truck from them. Word is that the location I was getting them from was the problem but it was corporate decision that was out of my hands to go elsewhere for trucks so I always had to leave a day early drive the truck 200 miles and have a another shop fix it. You name it I had the problem major air leaks, blown air bags, no brakes on 4 wheels, no ac no heat , blown turbos, severe coolant leakage/burning, gallon of oil every 500 miles, blown up trannies, no charging, wouldn't idle, burned out lights, 3 flat tires (different times when I picked up), water leaking around windshield, Non locking dif lock (resulting in truck getting stuck going into a driveway), alignment so far off truck would make instant right turn, missing slide lock from fifth wheel, you get the picture I could keep going. This is in addition to the simple whoops like forgot to fill tank before sending truck out, not cleaning trash out, unwashed trucks, no windshield washer fluid, bad wipers, broken control knobs, etc. which was a regular occurance. These trucks were from the Ft. Worth, Texas region. Stay far far away.

My recomendation is Pac Lease they only rent Peterbilts and Kenworths; they are owned by Pac-Car which owns/builds Pete/KW so new well maintained trucks( plus I think they are the best made trucks as do many others).

The best recomendation is the get ABF or other trailer and you load and they drive across the country. Many of these pups have lift gates just be sure to ask for one to ease loading of tools/equipment.

I heard about Fred and its a sad deal. It is though a good thing he passed on doing what he truely loved the best and I like you feel he went quickly. His loss will be felt through out the racing community and our thought and prayers are with his family at their time of need. If more promotors were like him imagine what the sport would be like.

As for the "Hot Rod" well,That may be reassembled sooner than you think... . Andy
