Dad removed the 5th wheel king pin from his 5r, and replaced it with a gooseneck stem, so he didn't need to have both a gooseneck ball and 5th wheel plate in his pickup, and so that my brother could borrow it to pull with his pickup, set up for a gooseneck.
One of Dad's rv friends told him that it was legal to have passengers in the trailer with a 5th wheel, but not with a gooseneck ball hitch. We don't know why, nor did we question that advice. Nor does anyone ride in the trailer while it is being towed.
Just my $. 02
