I have no axe to grind, But have had very good service with Diesel Injection Service. (in the links) Right now the EZ is $549:eek:

1. I've noticed some people talking about setting levels on the EZ. I was under the impression that the power edge "EZ" was a single setting box. Am I mistaken?

2. I've been thinking about buying one before doing trans upgrades (or guages for that matter)... is this a bad idea?

3. Also any comments on the improvement in acceleration? If the help is mostly down low would it be wasted with 4. 10's? thanks...

1. Yes there are three jumper settings that change when the EZ kicks in. It changes the timing based on boost PSI. The instructions explain it. It also helps with smoking exhaust pipes. But if you don't have any mods (bigger than stock injectors) on your truck them the max setting will be the best (setting 3).

2. You could put it in without the gauges if your not going to be pulling things. But I would get them at the same time if you can afford to. They will help you keep an eye on what is going with you setup. Also will help you determine if you have a problem.

3. Yep!! You will see a big difference off the line all the way up to 120 MPH. With 4. 10 and stock tires you will have to be easy off the line or you will leave a big smoke cloud! Not from the EZ, but from your tires! :D I have 35" BFG and 3. 54 ratio and it peels the tires if I get on it to much. If it is wet out, it will spin them till I back out of it. I can't wait to pull up to some hot rod truck and make him wish he had a Cummins! :D

4. Got my stuff from Andy Sebek @ Advanced Diesel Technology www.smokindiesel.com The EZ was $549. 00

I like the EZ. I got a set of Bully Dog Stage III's that I haven't got around to installing yet. The truck is running real well right now, so I'm not going to be in to big of a hurry to get a new clutch :D My fuel mileage has gone down since I got the EZ, but that's because I haven't been keeping my foot off of the firewall. When I drive reasonably, the mileage has stayed the same. The EZ is pricey, but delivers what it advertises.

Roger, we did a test swapping between my original VA and a EZ and there was no power difference. We ran the same hill on the same stretch of road up a hill and logged the same speed every time.

IF I were buying new today, I would probably buy the EZ simply for the adjustments for when fuel is added. Since I already have my VA, it'll do just fine.

I have a VA box, and have been surprised by recent posts about problems people have been having with them (I've had none ... yet). Has anyone switched bewtween a VA and an EZ (in either direction), to give some idea of the performance differences?

Thanks David. That was about what I expected, but I agree that I will replace my VA with an EZ, if and when it fails, to get the adjustability of the EZ. Of course by that time, there may be something even better.

Put my EZ on a couple weeks ago. WOW! Took my 10 1/2 foot slide in (3500 lbs) to Tahoe with it. That thing pulls hills loaded at 70 the it used to kick down for empty. Did a 200 mile round trip empty with my foot OUT of it. Mileage used to be 17. 6 for the same drive under same conditions. Now, 21. 4. With my camper up to Tahoe, 14. 2. On the way back, 18. 1, both with the ac on, 70 MPH in 110 degree weather. Did not mess with the wastegate.

If you are even slightly considering this---DO IT!!!!!!

Does anyone have any data as to what happens with fuel pressure after installing an EZ? If I really try, I can get my injection pump inlet pressure to drop to 2-psi momentarily. Won't the EZ make this worse? What's it do for the overhead computer? Can somebody explain the three different settings. Thanks,

Not much chance of that this side of the pond..... unless Marco goes walkabout..... ;) :p

David, I don't have a baseline to go by on fuel pressure numbers, but I will tell you what I'm seeing with the box. I've got modified Banjo bolts in my fuel system and I have a Stewart-Warner setup with two senders and the gauge. One sender is mounted at the banjo bolt on the filter housing after the filter. The other sender is mounted to the filter test port which gives me my readings from the lift pump. I am seeing 7-8 psi at both senders when I'm cruising at a set speed (55-60 mph or 60-65 mph or 65-70 mph) unloaded. The sender monitoring the inlet pressure from the lift pump occasionally reads a half psi lower than the outlet. When I floor it, I will see a quick drop to 0-1 psi. It comes back quickly though if I ease out of the throttle. Even at 0-1 psi, my truck never hesitates or commits any other 'functioning bodily' noise or symptons. I really don't feel like disconnecting the EZ to get readings without it. No fun running like that anymore :D. As far as the EZ settings and what they do, read this post.

with apologies to Eric Arthur Blair, better known as George Orwell ..... You're probably right Marco, but we should probably get around to meeting up at some time :D. I'll be in Dusseldorf in northern Germany around the first half of October and the south-east of France (Vaujany) in the Pyrenees just after Christmas... . unless you're travelling to England... . ??

So... . The big debate - VA versus EZ... I bought a VA, I was told that the EZ boxes could be detected after they were removed (Set a code in the ECM maybe???). What should've I bought? I'm not running big injectors, just the VA and 4" exhaust with a K&N on the way. I dont want to worry about EGT's so I didnt want to go hog wild, just enough to emabaress stock PSD's and DM's. I'll leave the big BOMBing ot after the engine warranty has expired.

Thanks John B. for the good info. I kinda figured that I would loose my 2-lbs. rather quick! I too have Rays modified banjo's but have only replaced the one under the fuel filter. I think that my present plan is to try to get one of those new lift pumps under warrantee (thus I'm leaving the stock Schraders in place for now), and then moving it to the back next to the tank.

Who did you buy your VA from, and who told you the EZ was detectable? That is not true. The only code it "might" leave is an "overboost" code if you had the wastegate modified and the boost module failed. But "overboost" codes can be present on a completly stock truck..... so that doesn't "prove" anything.

Again i ask who you bought the VA from?

Last time I had my truck in for transfercase seal I made them check a few other things with their "diagnostic computer" and I talked to the tech said no trace of problems. There was a problem with my IAT sensor tho apparently so got a new one under warrenty.

A local shop in the Seattle area that I will not name sold me the box. It was not mail order. The shop told me that it could set codes that would be detected. He didnt say what codes. He also explained that VanAaken had worked with Bosch on the specifications for the CAN bus. I couldnt argue either way.

I will say this. With exception of a little smoke while the turbo gets on the pipe, that box hauls!! I might've done better with an EZ, adjustability would be nice, but knowing myself it would stay on Max setting all the time :) I'm happy with what I got. And even though I'm not a quartermiler, it's more than enough power to get me in trouble.

Now you've gone and done it!

After all this banter about the EZ, now I want one!! Scared though... ... don't remember the HP and torque increase. Will the 6 speed handle the EZ without problems? Not a hot-rod, so just looking for better performance while pulling. Experience appreciated.

This really close friend of mine has an EZ on his HO/6 spd... . if you look at my signature his truck is pretty much a dead ringer :D :D :D He loves it to death-5th and 6th gear pull like a freight train. His is one of the ones that makes some smoke to let you know that something's going on-but he really doesn't mind because he's used to pushing a 425 Cat around-anyone that's ever run one of them know that you can turn the world black if you push the go pedal hard enough with the RPM down... He never got an increase in mileage but not really a decrease either once you factor in the extra pedal-for-grins factor. He has only towed 12 miles-6 either way with 7500 lbs. of trailer and that on the gravel so he only ran 80-85 km/h-but he can tell you that the truck pulled the trailer like it was a single-axle tent trailer... .

Basically I guess what my friend is telling you is that the EZ kicks butt-but it is addictive... he's already looking for more... .

The EZ and the VA do the same thing. Difference is that the EZ includes boost control and has three setting to determine when the fuel is added. The VA fuels immediately and the EZ fuels depending on where you have the jumper set. A VA with PS boost module performs the same as an EZ.

The VA connects directly to the CAN bus of the injection pump and the the EZ connects to the MAP sensor. I have not checked pricing in a while but last time I looked the EZ was cheaper than a VA and PS boost module combined.

As far as performance, if you tow, I love this setup with 275 injectors. The VA or EZ add power down low all the way up to about 2k rpm where it starts to taper off towards just above stock fueling. The 275's really start to come alive around 1900 all the way up to redline. With the two, this truck just plain pulls it's butt off.

My mileage did not change with the VA but EGT's were LOWER than stock. After the injectors, EGT's increased to stock levels, and my fuel mileage increased almost a full two 2mpg.

The only thing I don't like about the VA is that since it fuels right off idle, you will get smoke with no boost, meaning if you hammer it, you will puff black smoke until boost builds. This would be amplified if you wanted to add another box (PE/Blue Chip/TST/etc. ) where as you could set the fueling to be delayed on the EZ until boost is present.

Hope this helps.
