Thanks for passing on the information concerning "your friend's" truck. I'm not prepared to increase smoke output as I live in a subdivision. Neighbors tolerate the engine without any comment. Smoke, especially alot of it, would draw a lot of attention. I know, I know, it's my truck... ... . but I do respect their space as well. I have to climb a hill right after leaving the driveway. Low RPM and the hill would most likely produce the low throttle smoke "your friend's" truck does. Will have to give that some thought... ... .

As your friend tows more, I would be interested in knowing if he/she experiences any clutch slip. I know the EZ alone is not alot of extra power, but I get the inpression the stock clutch can only handle stock torque or maybe up to 600 ft. lbs. (read this somewhere on the board). Thanks!!

David, the EZ on a stock truck will give a small puff. If you live in higher altitudes, you may get more.

It wouldn't be enough to bother the neighbors, either.

Yeah the altitude here is pretty high-can't remember how much exactly but we're up over 3000 ft. I think. I'm sure that if my friend was to get down to a lower altitude-or when the outside temperatures cool down-his smoke will go away. He knows that he could reset the jumper inside the EZ down to 2 and make the smoke almost disappear, but he's really lazy sometimes :p and the smoke doesn't seem to be affecting his mileage too much...

He's gonna be hooking up to around 8000 lbs. of holiday trailer hopefully on the long weekend in August for a much-needed getaway as well as the chance to really see what it'll do. I'll keep you posted as to how his clutch holds up while he's towing-like I said we're pretty close-almost inseparable sometimes ;) . I'm pretty sure eventually he'll be investing in a South Bend clutch as exhaust is coming for his truck pretty quick and I don't think injectors are that far around the corner either... .

I too have Rays modified banjo's but have only replaced the one under the fuel filter.

I have two sets of banjo bolts. I bought a set from mopar muscle and Ray T. I like both, but I am using three bolts from MM. Two at the lift pump and one at the banjo inlet to the filter. Why? They have a bigger opening through the bolt and I want as much flow through the lift pump as possible. I think this is the reason I see slightly lower pressure readings from the sender on the inlet port.

EZ is AWESOME on the HO!!

RonO: The EZ is absolutely a kick @$$ addition to an HO motor. See my . sig, and my previous post in this same thread where I believe I listed my MPG increases.

David Wheeler: I had the EZ and DD Stage 3 afterburners in my HO for about 5 weeks and about 2000 - 3000 miles, still with the stock clutch, then I replaced it with the new Con FE South Bend clutch. When the old clutch was out, I looked at it, and saw no evidence of overheating so far, though I didn't really push the truck too hard for fear of destroying the stock clutch. Also I don't tow anything. The HO can certainly handle the EZ, and it most definitely makes it come alive. Of course I can't personally say how much of a difference it makes alone, as I had the DD Stage 3's installed at the same time as the EZ.

Honestly, my truck only smokes when I really get on the throttle at any RPMs for a real hard acceleration. Under normal driving, it doesn't make any smoke that I can see in mirrors at any rate.

So what, in genral terms, does the EZ box do? I've tried searching, but can't find out what it does?

I'm concerned about the EZ box and my auto while towing (ok, only a 5400# tt tho. ) Should I be concerned? Should I upgrade the TC first?

Thanks,

Pat

VA - EZ Question

My VA with BD markings died for the second time in 13. 5 months, called dealer in Illinois, comment amounted to "So Sorry Charlie" warrantee out in one year from purchase, so I got 13. 5 months at $45/month. That will be the last BD item I'll buy, and nothing more from the Illinois dealer!

I miss the power, and am thinking about an EZ. Is it a plug-in like VA or must you cut the wiring wiring.

Any info will be appreciated.

Denny:( :( :(

C. D. , sorry to hear about your troubles. The EZ just plugs in. EZ has 60 day money back, and 2 year warranty.

If interested, give me a call. Check out my site in my sig.

I spoke to www.smokindiesel.com today for awhile, they are great, very helpful and really know there stuff. He is setting me up with a fuel pressure gauge package that will include the Auto Meter Sport Comp gauge, Braided Stainless line and all the nessecary fittings. I am not going to use an isolator but they will offer a kit that does. They also have alot of stuff for the Cummins. They have the EZ on sale right now, CHEAP. Currently i am broke, so i had to pass. Give them a call.

Hey Pat-greetings from a fellow DiRT member... . the EZ box basically increases fueling and adjusts timing while also allowing higher boost by masking the boost signal to the stock computer. It plugs in between the MAP sensor (the boost fooling part) and into the data link plug on the ECM (the fueling/timing part). Can't remember what it adds exactly as far as power-if you navigate over to Edge's website ( www.edgeproductsinc.com ) there are HP/torque charts that should show you.

As for the auto transmission part that's something I can't tell you-my truck is a 6 spd... . but somebody should be jumping in here right away to let you know how things will hold up.

If ya would goto work a lil more rather then posting here you might make some money! Hehe Seriously, are you on a local job or something? Or ya run over the road in a pool? Long pool, short pool, extraboard? I know sometimes I see the same crew members out on trains almost each night I work, so I know we work our guys quite abit... ... . Just curious bout the "other" railroad... .....

just installed my EZ

I just returned form a test drive with my new EZ ... OUTSTANDING !!!

I have an auto transmission and probably will not see the dramatic change that those of you with manuals but what a difference.

Pat_in_Utah - I spoke to Bill Kondolay at DTT about that very subject. He advised that the transmission should be upgraded before or at the same time as the EZ. But he said that basically boys will be boys and if I should get the EZ first, at the very least, do a transmission service and make some line pressure adustments.

I ordered the TC, VB and EZ at the same time from DTT and luckily, the EZ arrived first ... :D

I will be installing the TC and VB next week.

Hey Kat. The reason i am never working is i am on paid leave pending my Transfer to the Bronx NY. I still get called for pool turns out of South Kearny NJ to take trains to Philedelphia PA. But not very often

Up untill my transfer went in, i was working 8 days on, 3 days off pool turns out of Philedelphia Pa and worked to Richmond VA, Baltimore MD or Cumberland MD which they then stuck us in a hotel till were rested. Or i was on the Philly to South Kearny NJ pool which turns us right around again or we get taxied right back to Philly. Most of our trains are Intermodal, Trash and mixed Freights. But we have 1 unit acid train, a slab steel train and 1 auto rack unit train. We also handle the Tropicana Juice Train.

We have NO coal trains or double stacks (too many low bridges)and our average train length is about 5,000 feet, the longest i have had was 12,700feet, the heaviest was 14,000 tons. Pretty much does not compare to the territory you work. Our biggest grade is like 1 percent and that is not very long. And our trains are nowhere near as heavy as yours. We have no helper territory, no DPU's, nothing exciting. I would love to spend a few months riding some of your trains and see what its like out there. I have taken Amtrak through the Moffat line and it is BEAUTIFUL out there. It would make going to work fun. All i really see is abandoned buildings and garbage. Are they looking for engineers anywhere in you area?

EMD - I'll email you.

Don't want to get this thread off topic... so I'll take our discussions to email. Might be later tonight before I get around to it.

What part of the country you interested in? I can check for any open positions on all of UP (even from home). Actually email me KatDiesel about what part of the country you might like (on the UP system).

Hey Steven, i am getting nervous now, everybody i have asked said the EZ is fine for a stock Auto Trans as long as you are not towing or hauling. Was what DTT said in regard to using an EZ on a stock auto a problem even if running ONLY unloaded???. I do not want to do ANYTHING more to my trannie other then a double deep Mag Hytec pan (And even that has to wait for awhile). I dont have the money for a Valve body or TQ now. How much damage will the EZ do to my stock trannie just driving around unloaded and occasionaly ripping it on the parkways and what not?

EMD ...

My conversation with Bill revolved around pulling a 9000# 5er with an unmodified transmission and the EZ. As long as your transmission is not showing any signs of problems, I doubt that you would have any problems with the EZ running empty. But for peace of mind, a short call to Bill may be in order. The new tollfree number is 866-504-4002

forgot to add ...

I have read many posts over the past few months about what changes people experienced after they installed the EZ. I must say that I had a little more expectations then what I got in reality. The truck does seem to have more zip but not that dramatic. I was wondering if the difference may be an auto transmission compared to a manual. I don't see much improvement from a dead stop but after the turbo spools it does move. I verified that it was set on position 3.

Hey Tom, that's really good to hear on the stock clutch. I may just go ahead and put my Bully Dog III's in and pray :D I think with the way I drive I could probably run that combo for awhile without having to worry about the stock clutch. What will get me is towing my TT. I plan on taking it to Virginia next month and there are some pretty good grades on I-26 that I would not want to be on and have my clutch start to slip on me.

Thanks for the good report.

Steven, on the stock automatic, it does feel like a small improvement. Most of that new power is lost in the TC. But once you add the DTT transmission mods, it feels like you're getting more power. Because now it goes somewhere. But then you'll want more and injectors will be added next. The EZ and injector combination really wakes it up, and makes towing much more enjoyable. Add one of Piers' new turbos, and the lag off the line is much almost not there. I have a thread in the products forum about the new turbo. It makes a noticeable improvement in off the line performance.
