I have sound coming from the engine compartment that, well sound like the old coffee percolator. Seems to do it more when it's colder outside. Anyone have any ideas?

Well, without knowing more. If it happens when it's running, it could be a blown headgasket.

I seem to remember a thread about some check valve or something like that in the heater hose where it connects block. Anyone remember this?

I remember something like that. it was a TSB about the fitting up by the valve cover. You replace it with a smaller orifaced fitting I think. look in the TSB section
