Hey guys I have a question about the 67500 mile service. My display says perform service. I have 67460 miles on the truck. It’s a 2016 2500. The dealer wants $800 to perform this service. The owners manual says this service includes replacing the CCV filter and cleaning the EGR cooler. Have any of you guys done this, is it difficult? Another question, I’m getting ready to go on a short trip of about 700 miles. If I wait for this service is there any chance the truck will de- rate or go into some type of limp in mode? Obviously I will get the service done at some point just unsure as to the urgency of it. Thanks for any comments.

comrade - i have watched a couple you tube videos on the ccv filter and the cooler cleaning. it looks easy to me, although i have not done this yet. genos garage sells the " kit " along with a solution to soak the egr in overnight. i plan on doing the service myself, when that mileage comes up. ( currently 45,000 18 2500 ) no idea on the limp mode question. sorry. cheers! :)

I had a 2015 3500 that I traded early this year. I got the perform service display half way through a trip to Alaska from New York last fall. Finished the trip, about 6000 miles after the perform service came on, nothing else happened, no derate or anything. Easy to change the CCV filter, didn't clean the EGR, didn't know that was part of the service.

I have 2016 2500 and just did this service mid-August with 66.8K miles, and I disagree about doing only the CCV filter on post 2013 trucks. Cummins engineers statements don’t control Ram warranty determinations (I would and personally follow/comply with Ram service recommendations).

EGR cooler and valve removal and cleaning is an involved but do-able project. Instructions from the Geno’s kit are good (the kit is very good/has all needed gaskets, etc. for all the work I describe below), and I used purple power as cleaner. A few recommendations: You will need a stubby 15mm combo wrench for removing a confined bolt that is part of the assembly in front of EGR actuator. A new brass wire brush, long flathead for scrapping/picking and compressed air help with cleaning (along with a shop sink or other area for rinsing). I recommend you do not follow motor city mechanic video where they tell you to unbolt the EGR actuator and bend it forward kinking the permanently installed spring attached to the forward assembly so you can access the EGR cooler. (That is short cut and I would instead follow the Geno’s instructions to remove the entire actuator assembly and watch a video that mirrors the Geno's instructions instead). Key is, take your time and layout removed parts (or take photos) to aid in reassembly and be patient/methodical.

I am a fair but not fast shade tree mechanic and it took me 6 -7 hours or so to disassemble and 5 or so to reassemble with an overnight soak followed by a good rinse and 2 hour additional soak in between. I took off and cleaned way more than the dealer service would (you are right there so why not) and it was all very dirty. I took off EGR cooler, EGR actuator assembly, the tube that connects actuator assembly to the EGR valve (tube is routed in forward of the valve cover), EGR valve, and air horn (my description/word choice) under the EGR valve. In addition to soaking and cleaning the EGR valve and cooler, I cleaned the air horn and grate over the grid heater and vacuumed it out, and put cleaner in the actuator/valve connecting tube and used compressed air with a rag in one end to jostle the cleaner around before blowing it out and following with a some water to rinse using the same process. I changed the CCV filter also and took photos/ save receipts to document the work in case there is ever a question that could impact the extended warranty.

Take your time, be patient and if possible work in some shade/warmth. Good luck!!

Lawdog how much build up did you clean out? How many miles/hrs on your engine?

I've got a kit and was planning on doing it this summer as preventative measures, but with the Covid I've been working alot of hours. I'm still planning on doing it.

2009 Diesel supplement:
Perform Service
This vehicle will require emissions maintenance at a set
interval. To help remind you when this maintenance is
due, the Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC)
will display “Perform Service.” When the “Perform Ser-
vice” message is displayed on the EVIC, it is necessary to
have the emissions maintenance performed. Emissions
maintenance includes replacing the Closed Crankcase
Ventilation (CCV) filter element, cleaning of the
Cooler, and cleaning of the EGR Valve
. The procedure for
clearing and resetting the “Perform Service” indicator
message is located in the appropriate service informa-
tion.

2018 Diesel supplement:
Perform Service — Your vehicle will require emissions
maintenance at a set interval. To help remind you when
this maintenance is due, the instrument cluster display
will display “Perform Service”. When the “Perform
Service” message is displayed in the instrument cluster
display it is necessary to have the emissions mainte-
nance performed. Emissions maintenance may include
replacing the Closed Crankcase Ventilation (CCV) filter
element. The procedure for clearing and resetting the
⬙Perform Service⬙ indicator message is located in the
appropriate Service Information.

No mention of EGR cooler or EGR valve in 2018 manual. In addition the 67.5K mile service in the 09 manual explicitly states EGR service is required but it isn't in the 2018 manual.
Where is your reference it is required for the later models?

It's not required but that doesn't mean it's not a good preventative measure. I have seen enough other diesel egr systems apart to know it's
a dirty system by nature.

Friends,

Checked my OEM factory service manual (FSM) and it only calls for replacing the CCV filter. I find it very interesting this service is called for at 67,500 miles, not 65K and not 70K miles like ALL the other service intervals occur at intervals ending either in 5 or 0. I have loaded ALL the maintenace action reminders into my Edge CST2 monitor, that works great as it reminded me to change oil at 10K miles, fuel filters at 15K miles, and air filter at 30K miles. Nice feature.

Another experience, I posted a thread where I attempted to install an oil catch can in line with the hose exiting the CCV cover/housing to limit/eliminate oil residue from the downstream components. The sensor didn't like it and kept throwing codes, so I eliminated the oil catch can. This tells me the sensor is very sensitive to gas flow pressure.

Cheers and Happy Maintenance! Ron

I have changed my CCV filter twice now in 136,000 miles. The only thing I can suggest is to were some Vinyl gloves that you can throw away with the old filter, this will help to keep your hand clean. The filter sits under the batwing (mine is MIA) and the long plastic cover that you fill the engine oil through (at least on my truck). You will need to un-screw this cover and remove a hose on the side of the cover. The filter sit's under this cover.

To turn off the perform service message (at least on my truck) follow these instruction for the CCV Filter.
here is how to reset the message
turn key to on do not start
press brake peddle 2 times
press gas peddle 2 times slowly within 10 seconds
turn off key

It may be different on the newer trucks, but I do not remember seeing anyone post a different message.

Is this the same cancelling procedure for a 2017 and 2018 Ram? And 2019?

JR,

I dont have a good frame of reference on how dirty it was...this was my first time doing this service. I thought it was real dirty and was surprised at the amount of soot in all of the areas I cleaned. It looked great/de-sooted when done. I have pictures of the parts clean/apart I can share, but dont think I took any dirty. I did not catalog the hours at service but I was at 66.8K miles. I think I am 2400 hours and 67.3K now but will need to check.

The 2015 Diesel supplement manual under 2500/3500/4500/5500 section has nothing about cleaning EGR at any of the maintenance intervals.

I am presently at 67.3K and 2135 hours. I had a ‘12 2500 previously that had a lot of oxygen sensor issues, short oil changes, etc. that I traded on my current ‘16. I imagine the 2012 would have been much dirtier in the EGR system as compared to the ‘16, but I feel good about having cleaned it (and as indicated it was plenty dirty on the ‘16). To each his own, the Geno’s kit was cheap, and I supplied the labor so it was worth it for me. I also did fluids and mag-hytec covers all around (diffs and transmission)...so it was several days of maintenance. She is looking pretty and ready!!
