OK guys, I have been researching (mainly this site) and others, seeking information on performance upgrades for my 1995 Cummins (manual). So let me start by staing that my main goal is better performance while towing. I the truck has pulled many heavy trailers over the years but only recently, while pulling my 30' fifth wheel, have I experienced a lack of effort by my truck.

Living in Colorado presents a couple of obstacles when pulling heavy trailers and engine mods. First, is the altitude, I will mostly be pulling the trailer on the front range/ foothills, which range in altitude from 5k to 9k. Secondly, we have to deal with yearly emissions testing on our diesels.

So far, from my research, I have collected a couple of ideas as a good starting point for mods to the 1995 Cummins. Obviously, the "best bank for the buck" would be a fuel plate (#8 or 10) and the 3k governor springs as a good start. Also, the truck has approximately 150k miles with the original clutch.

Sorry my post is so long I just wanted to explain my situation.

Thanks

You can install a #10 and set it aggressive if you wish. All the smoke control can be controlled by how you set up the afc. Keep in mind that your clutch wont like it and you dont have gauges. Do yourself a favor and invest in a set of gauges. (boost and pyro) Then concider a clutch in the near future... ... ... BOMBS AWAY!!!

I easily passed CT emissions testing . . see signature for mods.

My son also passed this summer... he has a 94, auto, 300 marines, HTT stahge III turbo, #6 plate, 4K GSK, del valves, BHAF,4 in ex. The truck can bellow smoke with some of the best of them.

I don't think you'll have any trouble.

Thanks for the reply’s everyone. I'm currently in the process of researching gauges. I should have a set on order by the end of the week. I wanted to have the gauges installed as a first step so I could establish a baseline before the engine upgrades. Clutch upgrades are definitely on the list. I'm also planning to fix the 5th gear issue when I upgrade the clutch.

I have read in other threads that some of the guys were "mechanically" limiting the engine to 3k rpm by limiting the throttle movement during emissions testing to reduce the amount of smoke from the truck. Not sure if anyone as heard of this.

An idea, since its not really hard to do, would be to adjust it where you want it for normal use, and when testing time comes, adjust the star wheel and AFC so that you will pass easily.
