I had a few questions to ask you guys. I am about to put a hx-35/16cm. on my truck, and after that I plan on putting some Piers POD's in it. My question is,will I be able to tow with this setup? My max egt is about 1175 now,and that is towing trying to heat it up. I know this is bad but that is with a maxed pump. I would also like to get one of Old Smokey's pins if I had room for it. But thats my question-can I run all of this?I dont mind smoke at all but want to be able to tow with the truck. Any rough idea what the egt's will be like?Or is this to much to ask for a truck that sees some towing? Thanks,

You can tow with any good mods as long as you keep your eye on the pyro gauge and either lift or shift if it goes over 1200degF for very long. I'm always looking to reduce EGT's without sacrificing power. Lots of little tweeks help (e. g. - like some minor timing advance, improve air breathing etc. ). Have been considering water injection.

Ditto what Jay and Bruce said also. I just put a set of POD's in and am still running a somewhat stock turbo. I towed about 10,000# right after I put mine in and there was no trouble. I had to keep an eye on the pyro, but it was no trouble. The problem is that it makes so much more power that where I would HAVE to downshift before, I can just hammer down and never downshift. That's when it gets hot.

I was also thunking of putting the HTT stage 3 kit in the turbo making it a 35/40 hybrid. I thought it might help egt's. Anyone using this modded 35?

You will probably want to turn the pump back down some with the POD's unless you don't mind smoke! :) I have the power wagon injectors with a Piers HX35 and 16 housing and when I installed a modified fuel cone I backed off a couple of turns with both the star wheel and smoke screw but still had too much smoke. I need a 4" exhaust to get more air thru the engine. I backed off on the pump and pulled the cone back out for now but still need to back off a little more. When the truck is not warmed up good, I need to be real easy on the throttle to keep the smoke cloud down.

I have helped my son do the HTT stage 3 mod on his 94 on his WH1C turbo.

Nice upgrade..... he's at about 300 rwhp... . he can tow at 85/90 and not melt down :-laf :-laf

He just drove in so I'll ask further details... he doesn't really look at his pyro however. .

I was planning to put it as close to stock as I can and then tune from there. Smoke doesnt really bother me but I have never run POD's.

I'm using the htt 35/40 with POD's, and I tow with mine occasionally. It does help over a stock turbo with EGT's, but you still have to watch the pyro.

I dont have any experience with PODs, but my PDR HX35 dropped me 100Deg EGT with a 18. 5 housing and stock nonIC injectors, so going to a 35/40 hybrid should help drop you a little more. I have towed 12K of hay and trailer with my current set up and did ok if I kept the EGT under 1350. I know drag racers who have hit 1800 going down the track 200+ times with no ill effects. Not that I'd recomend it, but the engine has taken it... ...

Caleb -

I run the POD's along with the -35/16, and when I moved back to Colorado the gross weight for my rig/trailer 'train' was about 18,000 lbs for 5 days. My biggest concern was actually not the pyro, but the trans temp - actually scratch that, those two were equally important. But, the rig had a lot more power than the trans could get to the ground with that weight. If the transmission had a lock-up converter, or was a stick with a good clutch, then the pyro would have been both most important because it would have been 'all engine'. I'm curing that problem with a 2nd gen DTT transmission this year, but, you can tow all day, but without a non-lockup converter I had to back out when the pyro got to 1200*. Actually I had the pyro at 1200* for over an hour, and the trans stabilazed at 235* and the engine at 225* - right up the pass out of New Mexico into Colorado. I'd back out at 1201* and just ease off until the hill crested, and along I went. If the hill was steep enough I'd get to about 50 mph and kick off the overdrive as I didn't want to physically grenade the transmission, but, over the top, back up to 50 mph, hit the od, and away I went. Did that all day - Incredible trucks.
