I have had a new Edge EZ on my workbench for two weeks waiting on a cold air kit and gages. I couldn't stand it anymore and thought I would plug it in for a test drive. Decided to install the boost elbow also. Noticed filter minder was at 35% and the filter looked dirty. Called the shop to see if my new cold air kit had come in today by chance - no luck. Put everything back together and reset the filter minder.

When I mashed the pedal and went WOT, the truck "hesitates" at about 2800-3000 RPM in third gear. I didn't notice it in lower gears but it may have just powered through and shifted. It seems to only be having this problem from 3rd to OD. It feels like it is defueling although I'm not sure I even know what that is.

The filter minder is sucked down to 100%!!

Am I running out of air? Am I running out of fuel? Will the box defuel if I'm running out of air?

Any help or suggestions will be appreciated!! This turbo diesel stuff is all still very new for me. I'm luvin it though!

I am guessing you are running out of air. My filter minder use to draw down to 35% with a new air filter on a stock SO 250hp. I drilled a 3inch hole in the bottom of the box an added a ABS street elbow now the filter minder acts normal. With the edge set on 2 with stock exaust and filter box you should be fine on the pyro temps as long as your are not towing. Get the gauges installed they are more important than the exaust and filter upgrade at your horsepower rating.

 I know, I know, I shouldn't do anything without the gauges first! Like I said - couldn't stand the temptation any longer. I thought I'd be OK since I had the 4-inch exhaust and I wasn't planning on any more than a test run on the factory set Level 3. I wasn't going to be pulling the boat yet and I figured I'd unplug the EZ after my fun.

Here's the latest. I unplugged the EZ thinking I'll wait until the gauges and cold air kit are on. The performance shop I use let me know that the Airraid Cold Air kit is IN. Well I didn't think that would hurt me and I know my stock filter is bad - so I put it on. I DID leave the EZ UNPLUGGED! I am trying to do the right thing.

Went for a test run and when I hit WOT - truck stumbled, spit, stumbled and just didn't run well. Check engine light came on!!!! It didn't go into limp or anything and I made it home with no problem other than the light.

Checked codes and I've got P0234 - turbo overboost condition. Darn - I didn't think about that boost elbow causing any problems with the EZ unplugged.

 The good news is that the filter minder didn't even budge off the reset position and I must have sucked enough air to get the turbo into overboost for the stock system.

Now I'll have to clear the code and figure out the next step. I didn't have time to play with it anymore today. I have to decide whether to plug EZ back in and run without gauges to see if all will work or take the boost elbow back off and wait for the gauge install.

I'm going to be real tempted to plug that little black box in again!!

Now I remember why I have leased my last three trucks - I was never tempted to modify something I knew I was going to give back!!

I would just put the EZ on, leave it on the low setting, and dont flog it till your gauges show up. Your not going to hurt anything as that is well within the specs for the rail and you wont produce any big EGTs numbers without something hanging on the stern. When I was EZ, 4", and intake I didnt have any worrisome egts even on the highest setting unless I was towing. I was able to pull my fuel pressure down to vacuum though. Hope your gauges show up soon so you can feel the love. :D

Set it on level 2 you should be just fine except for towing the heavy trailer over the "Grapevine" you should see mileage increase also. If nothing else drill out your airfilter box. Also i just put in a new factory airfilter they added a fiberglass pre-filter to them for the same money. I like paper filters period. Easy good filtration and cheap.

Thanks for the help and opinions. The gauges are just a matter of me deciding on what and where I want to mount and time to do it! Now I'm motivated and will make it happen.

I'm going to take your advice and plug EZ back in on the lowest setting and try that arrangment out. Then I need to put everything back to stock for a dealer trip to check out a p0483 code on cooling fan I've had for some time.

Thanks,

Roger

check your map sensor plug where the wires go into the EZ plug that hooks to the sensor on the motor. Try starting your truck and wiggling the wires around by the plug and see what happens. I had that wire get loose inside the plug on my box and it did the same thing your discribing.

I'll check when I go to plug the box back in.

Also talked to Edge Tech support today. The Tech was not surprised that the boost elbow had caused the overboost code. Sounds like this can happen with the box plugged in also. I thought it was just because I was running without the box at the time. I might just take the boost elbow off and go back to stock and leave well enough alone. I had read some threads that seemed to indicate the elbow helped to reduce EGTs and I was all for that. OH well.

without the box on, you will get an overboost code using the elbow. The box has a boost fooler that stops this from happening. Just keep the box plugged in. You won't have a problem at level two or even three most likely.
