I thought there was a thread discussing several different turbo for the 3 gen's. I haven't been able to locate it.

What are the different options for aftermarket turbo's for 3 gen's with 375-400 HP?

I do tow, so I would definately want one that will spool quickly.

I'm going to get a 100+ HP box, and will have RamAir Hood to help keep EGT's down.

I don't want to change the exhaust. I really like the quietness of the factory system.

Bob maybe the Dodgezilla? It's sorta like a PDR35/16 made to fit a 3rd Gen, and if that's the case Piers could probably set you up. At 375-400 you're definitely beyond the "Bomber Lite. "

I rode in Muddy's truck yesterday, he has the DD Jammer turbo and as far as I could tell it spooled pretty well. Certainly not as well as stock but for a big turbo you can't complain. Muddy has a DDT auto and DD2s and we were over 3000 feet so I thought driveability was very decent and acceptible for an auto. It was winding up pretty well by 1500-1700rpm as I recall. He was running without his box turned on. One downside is it's pretty loud but Muddy has the AFE intake kit with hard tube and it may be quieter with DD's air box. As far as I could tell it would hook up to the stock airbox if you wanted, but of course with an AFE or Amsoil drop in filter element and some additional holes or ducting to the airbox.

You might talk to Piers too, he's put a couple PDR40s on the 3rd Gen trucks. In terms of drivability it's hard to compare it with the Jammer since the trucks I've ridden in/driven with the PDR40 were totally different than a 3G auto but I'd say they're both in the same ballpark in spooling ability. I think the Jammer flows more at least on the exhaust side.

Here's a couple threads, mostly about the Bomber Lite but there's some other turbo discussion too

I have been running the bomber light turbo from Piers now for two weeks. I can still see temps in excess of 1400*. I have set up for about the same HP you are asking about. My truck is an SO california truck. 235 Hp from dealer. DD's turbo is way better at controling EGT's than the Piers turbo. It will probably work better on a truck with just a box or stage 1 or 2 injectors. I run it hard on level 4 and am running stage 3 dd injectors. In top gear I hit 1500* at 98 MPH pulling a steep grade. Most of the time though, with a heavy foot, it is staying under 1200*. I just wanted to see how hard it would go without popping. I also had to turn back the boost and remove the silencer ring to keep it from barking on hard shifts from 4th to 5th. Save your money and get the DD turbo. I have ridden in Fred Swansons truck with the same mods as mine and it has the dd turbo. That truck plain out hauls..... Greg

Greg, I think you answered my question, which was: can i run a piersifed stocker turbo with my TST box and be ok. .

I will have about 350 RWHP - So greg, that is about what you have right? ans the piers bomber lite did not help in your case (and HP range) at least it did not help enough, right?

thanks

Greg, your power level is obviously not where the Piers turbo was designed to run. Technically, you know that you need more turbo.

With that said, the Piers turbo is perfect for a set HP level, and for the price rightfully so.

Same with the DD turbo, it is designed for a specific HP range. That's what they built it for thus the completely different price.

I wouldn't compare these 2 totally different turbos, as they have a completely different target audience.

If you were just doing a DPM03 or EZ, the Piers "Bomber Lite" might be perfect for your application.

Now throw injectors into the mix, and you have to do something here, the stock turbo was never intended for this power, and neither was the Piers "BL" turbo.

Greg's is purely an experiment, and not a recommended setup. He knows he has another turbo in his future. And I'm sure his "BL" will find a home on a truck intended for this type of turbo.

Just making sure noone is trying to compare these 2 turbos, as they were never meant to be used on the same HP level truck.

Fred S. is right.

If I had to put some numbers on it, (I'm not no self-proclaimed expert :p ) I would say:

Stock to 330rwHP: Bomber Lite

300-370rwHP: Dodgezilla or other hybrid HX35/40 turbo.

330-500rwHP: Jammer or PDR40 or similar

475+ Twins Baby

Big Bob if you want quiet how about replacing your stock muffler with a 51" Donaldson 4" straight through? Part number M090544. This post makes it sound like it's about as quiet as stock but I'm sure it flows better, plus with the PSD intermediate pipe you could get rid of all the 3. 5" plumbing in your rig unless you keep your stock downpipe. Yeah, I remember him saying last month at Dishman Dodge that he was gonna leave er stock... ... You guys remember Steve Martin in "The Jerk" (bad name for that movie really) where he went bust and he was saying he didn't need nuthin--not one thing... . except this lamp BUT that is IT. Just the lamp and nothing else..... except this ashtray here..... BUT NOTHING ELSE!!!... . except this..... That's me... . geusterman

Anyone want to suggest a good turbo to run with the TST box and keep the 3. 5" exhaust outlet, to be able to still run a turbo mount pacbrake?

Go with an inline brake instead, and run the bigger turbo.

As I can ad to my above post. The bomber lite is a great turbo for the mild mannered EZ having trailer puller. Not some psycho like me. As for running it with the TST box, I would think it is too much box for a small turbo. I have heard that you might need twins to run that box to its fullest. Remeber that I am running 100 HP injectors with an EZ set on level 4. That is at least 150 HP increase(Kieth?). It is too much for the little turbo that would. Also rememeber, We ran DDII's comp boxes on Kill with a little HY35 on the VP44 trucks. Mine took a huge amount of abuse and still was fine.

That's why I asked, I already have the pacbrake. And an inline is not an option for me as that brings it down out of the engine compartment and subjects it to alot of nasty salt/sand/water/debris, and not to mention those mud holes and getting it buried in snow. I could keep going on, but I'd guess you got the picture. ;)

Come on guys, cut me some slack! I have always said that I was going to get a box when the dust settled! Now that I have been reading about the TST and high EGT's, I'm just trying to educate myself just in case I have to make a decision. ;) :D I will still be towing my travel trailer and a 5th is in the future, so I don't want a lot of turbo lag.

So Keith, you're saying there is no cost-effective improvement option for us to be able to take advantage of more (not necessarily all) of the TST's capability?
