Perplexing Airhorn Problem

I got this air horn, now I don't know where to mount it. Anyone got any ideas?

3 chimes: 11" 14" 17" and 11" high.



I think I'm gonna mount it under the drivers side of the cab. It would have to have a bracket manufactured, since it is so huge. Weighs about 15 lbs.



Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Truckers Train Horn

I have been considering getting a train horn from that same source (it's the least expensive I've been able to find). How is the quality of the unit? How was it dealing with the company?



I had actually been looking at the space in the fender ahead of the right rear tire, up sort of between the bed and the outer fender, with the horns pointing down. Let us know what you ultimately do (and pics would be great).

the horn trumpets are mounted to the base with 2 screws and sealed with an "O" ring [i've had to change a few at work on locomotives that have had the trumpit ripped off]. if you get creative, you can make your own base and assemble the horn trumpets side by side instead of being stacked. can save some room. aluminum block 1. 25x1. 25 drilled in the right places would work, or heavier wall [1/8"] steel square tubing with the ends welded up could work too...

Oasis3 mounted his up under the bed. I believe he got the Buell four note horns. It looks like a rack of ribs under there... .

i have some on my truck. if you dont mined them looking a little dirty mount them on the front crosmember. thats were mine are mounted mine. They are in the front of the truck but they will get alittle oil on them. but that just were i mounted mine. my air compressor and tank are mounted off the alternater which might not be the best place because of vibrations. i have had to patch my tank and actually today had to reweld the compressor bracket. It one of the few places i considered.

Tpruitt, how far down below the frame do they hang? Do they catch stuff from mud puddles?

the horns are mounted horizontally across the cross member. they might hang down an inch or so. i like to go off road so i mounted them in a way were i would not hit them. if they were under the cab they would get really muddy and dirty. on some of the river crossings that i have done they did get water in them but a couple of toots of the horn and they are good as knew. i will try and get some pictures of it and post them here.

Hey Vince, any install pictures yet please? I listened to the weblink to lonewolf . VERRRY impressive sound. What sort of compressor and air reservoir you got to keep them babies in full song? It sort of makes my Grovers look inadequate

Status update:



First the horns are going to be part of an onboard air system. There will be a QDC on each bumper( I may put one in the bed also), the horn, and eventually a ARB locker. The system will comprise of a York compressor and a 6 gal tank.



tpruitt - Which cross member did you put them on? The one in the front under the Inner cooler? If so, what way should I face them? I'm kinda partial to the right since that seems to be where most of the problems come from. Any pics would be cool.



JohnMcIntyre - Nope ain't installed yet, gots lots of people that are looking forward to it as much as myself. It started snowing here, so I haven't had a chance to get under it and look for more locations (I'm an Navy electrician and I don't like to get dirty unless I'm on my trains or on watch ;>). I have a couple of fabricators that will build what ever mount I need when I get the drawing and measurements.



I want to say thanks to you guys for all your input and help. Hopefully, I'll have them on this month. Also what pressure do you think I should run? I was planning on 115 to 120 psi. I'm also going to use 1/2" QDC's since no one else uses them (I'll make some sort of adapter for other sizes).

Awesome pics, thanks. I wish I could just mount them on the front bumper, facing forward. I hear it is supposed to get to 50 tomorrow, so I'll check out the front crossmember. Do you have the electrical hooked to the main "beep, beep" horn or a different switch? I've heard of guys doing that to get the "hello, do something" sound first, then the 'get the he!! out of my way" sound if they hold the horn down (steering wheel).

David, can you try flipping that picture of your Grovers install 90 degrees counter clockwise? I got a crick in my neck before I realised the angle you took the photo was on its side BTW, where is your air supply located?

i still have the main horn hooked up in the steering wheel. for the air horns i have a push button switch that is hidden away right behind the parking break release. there is a metal plate there and i drilled it our and put my button in there. if you want i can get a pic of that two just let me know.

I use the main steering wheel horn switch for both. There is a small toggle switch on the steering wheel cowl so that I can select which one is used. Also, when the ignition is turned off, it defaults back to the OEM horn so that I don't wake up the neighbors when I use the keyless lock.



John, what is upside down when you are laying on your back? If you view the Reader's Rigs section (link located at the left) you will see my full install of the Grover's. (https://www.turbodieselregister.com/user_gallery/displayalbum.php?&userid=364&albumid=785). The reservoir and Thomas compressor are each located on the outer bumper brackets. This kept my airlines nice and short.

The small red button lets the Grovers sing. I have recently replaced the painted aluminum bracket with one made of Delrin to eliminate the worn paint problem.

Ohh, man! I thought that was for nitrous! Neat install.

I tend to keep my right hand near the shift lever with my little finger somewhere on the horn button bracket (hence the worn paint). I go for days without hitting the button but it's there when needed.
