Cat power

It's a marine engine but it is available from the factory:

http://www.cat.com/services/shared/marine/pleasure_craft/propulsion_power/eng3400.html

Quote from Cat site:

The 6-cylinder 3406E isn't far behind its bigger brother, cranking out 800 bhp (597 bkW) with the help of electronic fuel injection and a high-position camshaft. Full power and torque are available at 1600 rpm, so you can head out with full confidence in conditions that would cause many engines to bog down.

I've worked and a few boats that had a pair of these beasts in them. I'll tell you that in a 65' boat it accelerates like a ski boat.

My uncle is a CAT marine dealer. Has 3 3412E's in a 125 ft. offshore supply boat. Like 24VChev says you could literally waterski behind this thing   .

They are de-tuned to 925 HP at around 2100 rpm. He waterbrake dyno test all new and rebuilt engines. That thing has side dump dry exhaust (no mufflers  ) and sound like a Top Fuel car when it pulls into the harbour.

The stray alley cats run and hide when this thing comes in from a run.

Marine diesels have an infinite supply of sea (or fresh) water available for charge air, oil and engine coolant cooling through shell and tube or plate-type coolers. This is one key factor that allows them to run such high "peaking-type" BHP ratings.

Finally got to see one at Northwest Peterbilt in Billings, sweet looking machine, didn't have the heart to ask the price though... knew I couldn't afford it anyway. I run bullracks and hay trailers for 3 guys around here locally, a 97 379 x-hood 550 Cat, 18 speed pusher axle, tri axle Wilson, a 98 379 short hood 500 Detroit 10 speed, pusher axle, tri axle Barrett, 2002 x-hood 525 Cummins, 18 speed, pusher axle and tri axle Barrett, and an 85 359 short hood 425 Cat 10 speed over, tri axle Doonan step-deck, I also run a 99 Freightliner FLD 120 Flat top with a pumped up 500 Cummins, 13 speed and a 48' Wilson pot this mother hauls the mail... . have the tickets to prove it!

After reading all of this, I emailed my buddy that works in the Peterbilt plant. It's just north of me in Denton, TX.

Here's what he had to say about the "X".....

The 379X is a 379 with most of the dealer addon acc. The sunvisor is laid down more on the windshield, air cleaner lights and lights under the cab and sleeper more chrome on the inside.

Also has the straight and much bigger exhaust. As for engine you should be able to get what ever you want. If I can find pictures of one I will send them to you. We are building about 5-6 per day.

rteig. The only two class eights I have any experience with are 2001 379 that has a 475 h. p 3406E and a 99 Freightliner that has a 430 h. p Series 60. Please tell me what the Cummins engines are like to drive compared to these two. Steve:)

The CAT C-16 600HP went out of truck production in AUG '02, at the time the 525HP C-15 was the highest HP CAT you could get. Now the ACERT C15 is in full production and the 550HP / 1850 ft lb rating is back. The ACERT C18 will replace the C-16 in 4th quarter this year(maybe?) but will retain the 600HP / 2050 ft lb rating, there will also be a 575/600 - 1850/2050 Multi torque rating just like the C-16 had. The C18 has been in use in Europe and Austraila for a couple or years or so at 700HP, but we will not see that here in Truck. Here C18 has been in use in Marine at 1000HP for a couple of years. I don't see any eng makers going over the 600HP mark anytime soon for EPA, and from what I've heard the transmisions are not holding up so well with 2050 ft lbs let alone 2400+. Also the HEUI fuel sys is only in use in the C7 & C9, not the larger C11,C13 or C15.

Sageair... that's a good one, I have been to Winnemucca, quite fitting! We are loading 64,000# on the Barrett bull racks grossing 100,000#. I have pulled that weight and sometimes a little more..... shhhh! with the 550 Cat the 525 Cummins and the Detroit which at the time was set @430/470 (now (470/500) I think on the long hills the Cat will pull just a little harder a little longer of course the Cummins had in the neighborhood of 50,000 miles and the Cat was around 700,000 both have 18 speeds. The Cummins is smoother and quiter and would out run the Cat except in the long hard pulls. The Detroit was backed by a 10 speed (Flatlander) and in South Dakota, southern Wyoming, and Nebraska you can hardly keep up with it but it falls on it's face in the hills mostly due to the transmission. I did run an older 379 exhd with a 500 Detroit and a 13 speed 3 axle tractor /3 axle trailer ~ 58,000# load and that truck ran really well even with 1,000,000 miles on the ticker.

Here in ny we have some trucks that have grandfathered 120,000lb gross over weight permits... . for down state. up state most is 107,000lb max over weight permit. . and thats the biggest you can get down state currently any how. . but the cats run good! lots of cats around here . . also good dealer support... the 550 with 411's and an 18spd pull sweet. the 600 engines feel 10 times better then the 550's, especially the rev up or torque rise. . sooo much different then the 550... . running heavy 40 tons in the dump box (tri-axle dump) 60 plus tons gross your looking at 3. 5-4. 1 mpg and drive tires almost twice a year and brakes on the trailer at least twice a year probably more. . lots of hills around here ... . i read a lot on the marine engines etc and i was checking out the c18 . . thats always sounded sweet its 1100 cubes too and 3400lbs in marine form (truck form is lot lighter then marine) so its alot lighter then a kta cummins plus the cat has longer stroke , and steel top articulating pistons wereas the kta has aluminum pistons... . any how i was dreaming of fitting a c18 in a truck with a 750 allison transmission that would be nice... now maybe you can actually get one next year... oh well now i'm in a police academy and i already miss my old job. . driving never gets out of your blood i guess.

thanks

p. s. on the marine engine note did you guys see the feb issue of national fisherman?. . its a diesel special ie... lobster boat racing etc. . but also noted was the new marine cummins 5. 9 common rail same as the 3gen truck's, any how it comes with 2 pieces steel top articulating pistons!!!... so i assume the common rail 3gen engine uses the same 24head style piston as a older 24v engine?!. . so the new marine 2 piece steel top pistons should be a nice upgrade for the pullers and drag racers with 24v heads ,to hold more egts... .

Dad's got a '93 T600 with 12. 7 Series 60 and 10 speed. Hauls grain in iowa, missouri, and kansas. Its running 470 hp at the flywheel and the only trucks that get around are the new cats, BUT he passes them back when they are fueling up at the truck stop. Getting 8-9 miles to the gallon when he doesn't have to sleep in it. Lost better then 4-5 them CATs get. I work on cats too, but dad's detroit runs plenty good.

The first truck I rode in with dad was a '70's freighliner cabover, complete with a 8V92 Detroit+turbocharger, and a 13 spd. That thing ****** off lots of cat and cummins guys. Course it was pretty ugly and was a meer grain hauler. Them guys with the bigs pete's and 425 cats and 400 cummins would cuss him when we'd go around, the old 2 stroke just screaming! He drove it forever, then it was retired because of frequent DOT inspections. The owner had a farm sale about a year ago, the truck was sitting in the same place dad parked it, the old girl sold for $200 complete! Good thing I wasn't there.

therabbittree,

There should be no prob getting a C18 in a truck. The outside measurements are the same as a C15 and both should be around 2890 lbs. Can't wait to get one on the dyno so I can see both turbos glowing ;)

i hear that i know a guy who is waiting to order one soon. . the local cat dealer ho peen told him a 700hp cat would be available next year . . suposedly he wants to order up a 900l kw with the big cat and a allison transmission , much easier on parts for the whole truckwith the 600 and 550s we saw lots of rear suspension bushing and other components not last as long..... i personally also like the 14L series 60 if you can ind one. . super hard to find. . there are a ew guys up by albany ny area who do the truck pulls and drags and they are sporting 12. 7 series 60s that RUN... often beating the big cats... and these guys run em daily hauling walking floors for trash... . i 've got two 6v92 silvers stored down at my parents drive way. . im debating building a 12v92. . it would be pretty cool sounding... just not sure of the truckto put it in. . i know where i can get a early pete 352 cabover but the wheel base is short... . a cab over would be cool with the engine sticking out the back this one is a short sleeper version... . although i've always loved convential long hoods (who doesn't) ha... maybe i could find a old or even newer truck as a glider for it. . 12v92 with allison transmission... . would haul some ass... i wonder what the mpg would be like hehehe i alkso know where a kw A model exhd is with a kta 600 and twin sticks 5x4... but teh guy wants too much money for it and the truck needs a lot of work and its aluminum frame. . i've heard bad things about them...

later
