Folks,

I am getting ready to replace my front pads with the Performance Friction carbon-metallic pads. The only issue is there are two varieties - one with two "ears" on the inside pad and one with no ears. Is their any way I can determine which is the appropriate pad without taking off the wheel, etc?

I have a 99 2500 4x4.

Thanks.

Craig

why not just buy both , have them right on the reciept which is with ears and when you do the deed you will know which box to open and which to return ????

Craig, call Sam Peterson at 360 357-4958. I just installed a set of carbon mets I purchased from him and they seem fine. I know of another fellow in the bay that also replace his pads with the carbon mets with similiar success. Sam is in Olympia WA.

If your truck is a 4x4 you need perf frict #4594. That is the solid top inner pad. The other pad will fit but the inner pad is thinner. It is used on the 2x4----Sam

Sam, I saw the difference in the 2 pads and wondered if the 4594's would fit my 2wd? Sure could use more inner pad on mine! only the RS Inner ever shows much wear. I have been through problem several times. The calaper is not frozen, I do notice a wear mark on the calaper where it rides on the mount, but I can polish this out every time. I have had all the slides apart, nothing is binding. Clean and re-lube everything every couple thousand miles, same problem. As you know, lots of us are having this RF Inner problem.

I relize some of the fast wear problem is lack of rear brakes (unless you keep adjusting them) but that would still not make the RF inner wear faster then the rest.

In fact I don't even check the LF brakes! Just look at the RF inner and I know when its time. Last time I did not have new pads laying around, so I just rotated them!

Towpro---Got some info on the thicker 459 pad fitting the 2x4. The caliper mouth on the 2x4 caliper is 1/4 inch narrower than the 4x4 so no room for the extra thickness. Sorry---Sam

You are a wealth of Knowledge!
PS: when calaper replacment comes due, will the 4X4 calapers fit the 2X4? Might be worth the extra pad. But then I don't use the brakes much since I installed the BD brake.

Towpro--I am going to be replacing the front u-joints on my own truck on monday{64000 miles of hiway driving and they are shot] I have both types of calipers in stock so I will see if the 2x4 caliper will fit my 4x4. I will post what i find out on Tuesday. ---Sam

Sam,
Got another question for you, both of the front rotors on my truck have slight heat check cracks in them. Should I replace them? The truck stops straight, no brake pedal pulse or shimmy. I bought the truck used and the cracks where already there.

The OE pads heat checked my 2WD 3500 front rotors in the first 40K. Switched to PF pads and now have 122K on the same rotors with one turning, one replacement of calipers (cheaper than rebuilding) and 2 sets of PF pads.

The replacement cost on the 2 WD one ton rotors (integral to the tophat offset, not replaceable like the 4 X 4) is 175-200 per side. So I am stretching them out as far as I can.
