Getting ready to buy a Phat shaft 62 for my 03 CTD. Unfortunately I live in the misguided state of California (home to Tookie Williams and Arnold). I'm pretty certain that California will soon have smog tests for our Diesels and my question is which housing should I go with (12/14)?

I do use the truck several times a year to tow a 29' travel trailer (10,000 lbs) up into the Sierra's (8000 + altitude). The only modifications to the truck are an EZ edge set on 2, an ATS manifold and an AFE air box. The current, soon to be shelved turbo is a Piers modified 3g turbo. Also most of the time the truck is used as a kid hauler grocery getter.

Questions: If I went with the 12cm housing for smog reasons would I really lose much in reduced egt's to the 14cm? Would the 14cm create much more smoke over the 12cm? Would the 14cm create much more lag?

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

I have ran both on a htb2-62. The 12cm is good to 475 hp and spools a little sooner with lower hp. At 450-500 hp I would go with the 14cm. When running higher hp the 14cm spools just as fast and egts are a little lower. If I wasn't planning to run over 450 hp I would get a 62/12. You can always up grade later.

Depends on your fueling and ultimate power goals. If it were me I'd go for the 14 for what you've described but if I were going to build it into a twin setup the 12 is probably a better choice IMHO.

jray,

Tell us about your expierience with the modified turbo. Any barking problems running light of towing? How much did it drop your Egt`s when towing?

SFR,

The modified Piers 3g is a good turbo for some trucks. Unfortunately my truck didn't respond well to this turbo. It did help to control the egt's after adding the EZ edge, lowering the egt's about 150 degrees. The problem that the turbo has caused me is barking. When towing in overdrive it's non-stop barking in the 15-20lb boost range. This in turn causes me to tow in 3rd gear to avoid the bark. Keep in mind, I pull a high profile 10,000 travel trailer. Even when not towing, but under heavy acceleration I find that the turbo barks. Piers was aware that some trucks have responded the same way that my truck did. They in turn recommended the B-1 turbo.

jray,

Thanks for the info. Verifies what I have read in other threads. A stock looking upgrade would be nice but not worth any problems. I think a 62/12 is in my future.

i agree ;)

I'll be interested to see if this discussion develops further. I too am interested in this turbo so, I am curious to see how the recommendations turn out. My personal interest is to tow my race trailer at around 500hp. I figured I needed to go twins eventually so, I was thinking about getting the 12 cm housing for now. For reference, my dyno numbers in my sig are on the stock turbo.

towing at 500 h. p. will definitely take its toll on drivetrain, i would get the 14 housing with 500 h. p. and it will still spool pretty fast with a twins set up, i run a 16 housing on a junk hx-40, after the injector install, my turbo lag is no longer there and i am at 5-6000 ft elevation, also the larger housing will help keep your drive pressure and egt down, just my . 02 cents, towing with twins is awesome... ... , no surging, low egts, no turbo bark, just plain clutch killing awesome... . :D

I went with the 62-14 and it spools great. It actually makes normal driving even easier. I bought mine to tow and to play. .

From what I'm reading here, I could easily go to a 14cm housing if I was planning on going 450+ HP. At this point I'm planning on staying on the conservative side of high performance mods (probably less than 400hp), and mostly for drive train longevity.

Based on the info provided by Wcounts and others I leaning toward the 12cm housing. I might change my mind if I was covinced otherwise. Again I'm not planning on any further mods to the engine (unless I win the Lottery :-laf ).

Hemi I'm with ya. Ron's the man. Good price and a great turbo. Someone wrote a post about this turbo on Ebay a week or two ago.
