'05 48RE Changes?? Explain the "NO LOCKOUT"

EDGE Question

I agree my sps66 barked quite a bit at first, I even posted griping about it. But after a couple of weeks it mellowed out, I don't know if it was the turbo or my right foot getting trained. Mine seems to bark less when the TST has a lower tq setting than hp setting.

mine doesnt bark as much as it used to, seems the more you drive this charger the better it runs. the surge isnt even an issue.

I am going to order a BD BOV on Monday and see if it helps the bark that I get when I shift. Plus, I would think it will keep the turbo spooled up more.

I'll post the outcome once received and installed. I'm not too thrilled when I hear the bark, thinking it just can't be good for the turbo.

The BD TurboGuard (BOV) will help you with a manual transmission. It is actuated by how fast you let of the throttle, and it is adjustable.

For the guys with auto's on the upshift, I don't think there is much to help you from barking the turbo when the transmission up-shifts at WOT. Some don't have that problem, but other do. The BOV still works if you let off the throttle quickly.

Mine has never had any surge issues. I have learned to ease in and out of the throttle during normal daily driving. But it does not take more that 1/2 throttle acceleration and letup and mine barks. It will always bark on heavy throttle to OD and sometimes 3rd. Like I said I love the way it spools and works, I can live with the barking when it happens, but I still don't think it is good for a turbo to bark at 45+psi boost and WOT. But it sure does clean up a lot of smoke in a hurry.

Mine barked a lot the first few days, but it doesn't do it now much at all.

I have to share this picture with you. Look carefully at the stock turbo on the right. Notice the very very very small turbine inside the black hole? Now compare it to the exhaust side on the SPS66 on the left.

If you look at the pic of the 66 in the bottom of the exit point you can follow the wastegates exhaust and see how it dumps aft of the wheel.

in-line ebrake. isnt this turbo off an s300. what size is the turbine. how does it spool compared to a htb2 64/14 or 66/14? i may have to consider this turbo. what the cost? thanks

JCleary -- In the form they send it to you, the SPS66 will NOT fit with the Kore towers. I had Floor-It install mine. The 3 hour job ended up taking two guys all day long and then some -- but we made it work. There are two things that you'll have to do to make it fit. There physically isn't enough room for the turbo to fit in the "contour" in the kore tower. There just isn't any way. What we had to do was clock the housing on the intake side so that the snout was above the shock tower. They also had to grind part of the turbo housing down to make it fit -- but just the point by the snout so that it clears the shock tower. After that, you have to rotate the intercooler hose to make it clear. When it's said and done, there is VERY little clearance between the intake tube and the intercooler hose, and same with the shock tower -- but it does fit.

Do you have any pics you could post here or send to me? I need to show my mechanic what he needs to do when I get mine hopefully later this week.

When you say very little clearance, how much? Is it enough to allow for the movement of the motor?

How about milling the KORE tower? Would that make it fit easier?

Another option I was considering was using a 2nd gen ATS manifold and flipping it upside down like I've seen in twin setups. Should be plenty of room for the turbo, but I don't know what I'd have to change between the turbo and intercooler. I know a custom down-pipe would be needed, as well as making a custom intake to match up with the AFE or BHAF I'm going to use.

I just don't want the turbo to be smacking the shock tower when I'm running the truck hard or goofing around off-road.

Meaning?? Is this good or bad??

Nope, it's a good thing! Unless I see something in the future HP I'll never put an external gate between the manifold and top turbo as the 66's gate works really well. The way that exit point is it will never create a problem.

So out of curiousity... . are there any of you out there using this superb turbo on a 2nd gen 24V? I am currently running a B-1, and it sounds as though the 66 is a superior unit... Will it act a lot different on my truck than on a 3rd gen? My b-1 spools very nicely, will this one be slower? I would like to run a bit more fuel into her, and think with the addition of the 66, I could do so and hopefully keep my EGT's a bit lower too... any help would be appreciated.

See this thread. I believe a few are doing it:

Well,Send Me some along with 3-flows. and Longer studs.

Shoot... . missed the winter wear by a week.

JCleary -- I don't have any post-install pics yet. I have to fly out to NC early in the morning and back in the evening, so I won't be getting any tomorrow. I'll try to get some by the end of the week. There is enough room for things to move -- barely!

RE: Phat Shaft Turbos/ Pac Brakes

Yes our turbos will allow you to use a Pac Brake or a Jake Brake with very little problems. Some times the bracket will need to be ground slightly but that has been all that is needed. Thanks 1-800-955-0476
