Phat Shaft turbo users

Is your side to side shaft movement more than your stock Holset was? Today I had my airfilter off and was a little surprised at how much movement there was compared to when I installed it 5000 easy miles ago. There is no front to back play and the side to side isn't letting it hit the compressor housing. I am curious though if this much play is normal considering my hx35 had very little play side to side after 40k miles and this ps62 was tight when new. I have this wastegated at 40 psi and it rarely sees that.

I had a buddy help me install a used one with around 5,000 mile on it and he commented on the play also. That was also when the turbo was dry and I was told the oil might take some of the play out. I put it on and it's ran fine since then.

The oil will take some play out, side to side is ok as long as it doesn't rub, end to end (thrust bearing) is the bad one. You should be fine.

i did notice some on mine, it was the same as you described. it has been running great.

it normal for the turbine to have some side to side play, when its not in use. when running the turbo bearings are filled with oil to eliminate play. the only thing you should worry about is in and out play, or if its rubbing side to side. then you have problems

You mentioned when running the oil fills up, you didn't say you hadn't checked it while running though. I think I will let the cat tell me.

Mine had a lot more play than the stock turbo, It seems like it'd hit the sides, but doesn't. Scared me at first. 10k later it's doing great. I guess a little more play leaves room for a little more oil.

Mine has plenty more play in it than the stocker but then I had a HARD time making the break-in before I full spooled it so it could be my fault. also have some start up smoke might be from the seal leeting oil drip into the down pipe.
