3.07 to 3.73 Gear Change Question ?

I'm working on a 90 D200 , took out the 3. 07s to put in 3. 73s. Didn't know 3. 07 housing is different and ran into carrier problem.

Not wanting to change the whole rearend I spent some time figuring this one out. My solution was to take 4. 56 carrier and machine off . 150 off the pass side to move over to the right side and use a . 150 spacer on the left side. Set up is good but one problem now , ABS magnet is not lined up with tone ring.

The owner says the ABS doesn't work as the lights are always on anyway and as far as he is concerned he doesn't want ABS .

Anybody done this gear change and how did you do it ???

By the way this truck has a US Gear Exhaust brake and dash gage cluster with pyro, ex temp & oil temp , none of them are hooked up and owner says I can have the stuff if I want to take it off . Is the ex brake worth the effort for my 93 ?

As far as the custom mods to the rear end I can't be of much help.

I bet Philip can help with this though... ..... HEY PHILIP !!!!!!!!

Regarding the exhaust brake, if it is in decent shape, I'd take it.

Since you have a 5 spd it will work for you fine... . assuming it's in operating condition.

Take the guages and any extras you can get... Be sure when you take the pyro that you are careful with the connection wire(s), especially the one to the probe. Try not to kink it.

Bob.

I haven't done that swap eather. I know when I was looking for a rear axle for mine. The place I finaly got the rear axle from tried to swap a set of 3:08's into a 4:11 housing. All they said was it wouldn't work. So I am not much help there. If you got the backlash and gear pattern to come in good. The your mods should work.

Where did you find the 4:56 carrier. Those were used most of the times in 6 cylinder trucks. I haven't ran across one of them in a long time. LOL

As far as the ABS if the owner doesn't want it I wouldn't worry. Mine hasn't worked on my truck sence I got it. I have no plans on fixing it eather. The Dodge ABS used in this year model trucks=:(

Now why 3:73's. I hope the truck has a stick shift in it. If it has a 727. I hope he doesn't have to go anywhere fast.

Grab everything he is offering. With you having a stick. You can use the exhaust brake.

Philip, The Carrier is Dana 708023, I got a good pattern but I don't like having that many shims on the left side so I'm going to use a . 120 spacer between the race and the housing.

I thought you had made a one piece spacer to go in there. I wouldn't leave that many single spacers piled up. It will spit them out.

I would really like to change out my 3. 54 to 3. 73. Can I do this just by changing out the gears or will I encounter problems? I got bigger tires and I would like my gearing to be back where it was. How much different will the 3. 73 be from the 3. 54? I just want to bring my shifting down by a few MPH.

I think on the model 70 axle. The 3:54's and the 3:73's run the same carrier assy. The break on the carrier is 4:11's if I remember right.

I sold the 307s already, thats was the best part about the job.

Philip

As far as going to 3. 73s the truck is used everyday to haul a constuction trailer with over 6000 lbs. and with the 3. 07s it wouldn't go up any hills .

I want to follow this thread and see what comes in. The info explains several questions I have had regarding the uniqueness of the the 3. 07 housing. The hypoid (the vertical offset of the pinion from the center line of the axle) then is the same and the only difference is the side offset. So some fritzing with the carrier makes it possible to do some swapping.

I think it would be a lot easier to just get a 3. 55 housing and put the 3. 73's you want in it..... There are plenty of guys out there that need or want the 3. 07's and the housing that would gladly trade you a 3. 55 rear for your 3. 07...

I know one guy that lives in Md and Fl . He is back in fourth all the time... .

He bought an 89 that had a 3. 55 rear out of a 92 in it... . He has asked me several times if I had a 3. 07 that I would trade him..... He is not a tdr member but I will get you his # if you like... .....

Another thing that I will mention is that there is a way to put 3. 55's in a 3. 07 front axle..... It requires a special differential and gear set that can be gotten from Spicer (Dana) ..... I don't remember the part #'s . The tech guys at spicer should know though
