Pick-ups at scales?

Coming back from Reno on Sunday, I saw at the scales out side of Truckee the sign said "Pick-ups towing trailers over 34 ft. MUST stop at scales. "



What's up with that? Does anybody know if it just the Hot-Shots or big RV's also.

Pretty sure in most states, pickups towing RV's don't need to hit the scales. Now if you're hot-shotting, there's a whole "nuther" story on that due to DOT regulations (local haul, personal hauling, etc. , ) Seems there was some discussion on this board awhile back - you may want to do a search. I frequent one of the RV oriented boards also, and the question has come up too. Pretty much a non issue with campers (unless you're hauling/transporting them for hire)

If you are under 26,000 lbs GCWR and not hauling commercially or hauling hazardous material in a placardable quantity, you dont need a CDL. I will bet they are looking for length violations. Here in Utah you see a lot of pickups and SUV's towing doubles and if I remember right we have a 65 ft max. length law. Many are over.

Campers and fiver RV's are exempt from about everything here in Oregon.
