Exhaust Brake Ready???

Andy, does your owners manual say anything about your 48RE being exhaust brake ready, and if so, how?? I am waiting to buy my Pac Brake til I find out it if the air compressor is still needed... ... ..... thanks, Sarge

The dealer here in Denver has 3 600's - 2 LWB & 1 SWB on their lot. I drove the SWB larime. All I can say is what a nice running truck. Quiet and very smooth. I'm getting one soon. . :D

I have heard a lot of the 03/04 trucks and they are very quiet. Maybe even quieter than my V10 (after they are warm). I have a 04. 5 on order and will be here probably within two weeks. My question is this: How much quieter can they really get?

Andy, I expect to see a full report with pictures on my desktop by morning. :D I can't wait till I get mine. It only took yours 22 days from order to delivery. WOW! Maybe I'll get lucky like that too. One thing I am glad of is the dealer I ordered from is 300 miles away which will give me ample time to try her out on the way home. I'm not too sure I like the quieter thing; I think the current engine is quiet enough. As long as it still sounds like a Cummins, I guess that'll be ok. How's the turbo sound? Do you expect to be towing anytime soon? If so, make sure to tell us how it goes.

No mention of exhaust braking in the manual for the 600.

I don't plan to do any towing until next week. That gives me a little time to put some miles on it and besides it's Super Bowl weekend and I do live in Houston.

I think the '03-'04. 4 trucks sound like a 3-cylinder John Deere or 3 cylinder in a Ford 555 tractor...

Just talked to the dealer-truck is held at rail yard because of snow-if not released by tomorrow they are sending drivers to the rail yard to drive the 4 trucks they have down there back. He said I should be able to get it Friday or Saturday :)

i second that! it's become WORK trying to make this thing sound like a truck -- goes to show you, you will NEVER satisfy everyone.

sorta glad to hear that the 4. 5 has the HY35 and not vgt :( - that means we are not far behind with the technology in the 03/04s.

3 squirts per cycle is going to cause major headaches for the chip makers -- haven't been able to figure out 2 squirts yet! the 3 squirt chips will be delayed till 2007 :D

glad i have my 03! enjoy your 4. 5s

RDietze, if you take a close listen to a 6-liter PowerStroke with 4" exhaust and straight through muffler I think you'd change your mind about wanting a VGT. At least in the case of the PSD the turbo sounds like a dental drill on steroids!!

With the aftermarket turbo options out there now I'd rather have some basic cheap stock turbo so I'd feel justified in repacing it with something better :)

Wow. Your boat must have floated faster than mine. I spoke with DC today to find out where mine is since the dealer expects his shipment this week, and my '03 goes to the shop next week. They say mine is still on the boat in some port waiting for the next available train. Can't remember the name of the port, La Vxxxxx something-or-other. It's been waiting for this train since 13 January... I have a rail tracking number which says the railcar is in sitting empty in Laredo, but headed for Cuba. Guess I'll be cancelling the shop appt 'till they can tell me for sure that it's not lost or sunk down in the gulf...

congratulations gfrance,

just turned 1000 miles on my 04. 0 today. (like that . 0?)

i actually wish at times it was a little louder. it is great in the morning at 1500 RPM. i know for sure it is a diesel then.

don't baby it. get into it pretty soon. dont stay into it long but there is no reason you cant pull to 3000 in 3rd or 4th:rolleyes:

i had mine hard through 5th by the time it had 100 miles. it just gets better every day.

Mine did not have to float-was on the same rail car from Saltillo to Winston Salem, NC, but it was on 3 different railroads. First on TFM (in Mexico, to Laredo, TX), then Union Pacific, (to New Orleans), and then Norfolk Southern (to Winston Salem, NC).

I don't know how many injection events the Duramax has per combustion event... . but I do believe the 'pilot injection' shuts off and defaults to one injection event after a certain RPM.

The 2nd Generation Power Strokes also shut off their pilot injection after a certain RPM just off idle.

The '04 HO Cummins I drove didn't seem to ever shut off the multiple (2. . ) injection events at any RPM.

I picked up my 325/600 Friday evening. Have not been willing to walk away from it long enough to post until now. This thing is a monster! It is impossible not to smile when I am driving it. The "football delivery pipe" is incredible, although my wife and kids are already complaining that the woosie suitcase sized muffler is way too quiet. The only exhaust clamp issue that I can see is the fact that all of the clamps are installed with the bolts pointing downward, as in "where is the next big rock". I plan on turning them over today.

Having not driven a Cummins before, other than my test drive of an "SO", I note some big differences between it an my Ford IDI 7. 3 with Banks Turbo. The Cummins really comes on hard at about 2000 RPM. Comes as a bit of a surprise the first time driving. I really like the positive feeling of the NV5600, although I am not yet used to the narrow gate in 6th. It is really great not having an indecisive automatic transmission in charge of gear selection.

As far as engine noise is concerned, this thing is amazing. My neighbor up the street has a 2nd gen, and there is no way that he can sneek away. Not so with this truck. It is pretty nice. I like diesel noises, but am a bit embarassed when I need to start my old (7. 3) truck early in the morning. This thing is so quiet that it won't be an issue. (at least until I change the muffler)

For those of you who are still waiting, I placed my order in Pasadena on December 12th. The truck was built at the Saltillo, Mexico plant on January 8th. Shipped by rail via Laredo, Texas. Was waiting in Loma Alta, about 60 miles away by Jan 23. I took delivery on Jan 30. That last week was a killer wait!

The dealer has been teriffic. Would highly recommend to any locals. PM me for details.

One word of caution, look over your new truck carefully. My right front, chrome plated plastic "wonder cap" had been mashed by contact with the guide rail on the transporter. The damage was hard to spot, especially at night, but the dealer was quick to promise me a new one. Seems pretty obvious that these will not survive any kind of abuse.

Matt

Thanks for the writeup and review Matt. Those of us that are waiting can now drool a little more.

Congratulations, and post pics if you are able. :p

I noticed the same thing-what are they thinking?

Excuse my ignorance, but what's a "wonder cap"?
